It's no trouble to me to reinforce someone's mistaken feeling of superiority to someone else. The problem is for the someone else. So the threshold you propose is insufficient. And I nowhere compared the two cases you mention.

I don't think you'd actually want to do that. There have been throughout history lots of people who on account of their birth or religion have wanted to be treated as superior to some other group. Would you just want to go along

Using the term "political correctness" doesn't imply that one is automatically dismissing all talk about racial discrimination, for example. Political correctness is a distinct phenomenon-- at least, as distinct as any socia

The best metaphor for this might be aerodynamic drag. A bad name can slow you down. You'll prevail eventually if you're good enough, but slower than you would have done with a good name. Whereas a good name won't get you a

Conveying respect is not a fashion. The fashions are in who you're supposed to respect and how you're supposed to show it. You can read more about this here: http://paulgraham.com/say.html

The funny thing is, your own comment could make you look like an "asshole" in a few decades when moral fashions change again. That's part of the problem with political correctness. The other and much worse part is that in s

I thought this would be about Shana Fisher. I met her at an event and she asked me to give her a list of YC cos that were good but that VCs didn't get. I realized this was the first time anyone had asked me that, in 8 years of doing

The troubles the company had with him don't reflect on his credibility as a witness of the things he did see. My point is that there was also a lot he didn't see.

The most striking inaccuracy is the superficial description of YC, both in breadth and depth. You can't accurately describe the interview, or the many interactions we've had with the company since Demo Day, since you weren't

I believe the canonical answer to questions of that type is Mu ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mu_(negative) ). This article purports to be a YC founder's recollection of YC. Pointing out that it's not is not s

I was curious about who this guy was, since this is full of inaccuracies and yet shows some inside knowledge. It turns out the author is not a YC founder, but a programmer who worked for one of the companies we funded, and who didn't

The way we managed to fund fewer startups was to train ourselves to pick better. So essentially we said no to startups we would have mistakenly said yes to before. Unless we can improve our ability to pick winners at the same rate the numb

I do make unconditional donations to Bing as well, and larger amounts than this auction is likely to generate. Yes, frankly, I feel like the concerns expressed here are a kind of moral bikeshedding. What harm does it do if one rich kid get

Since the money's going to scholarships, the situation actually is something like that, except the latter parents get something better.

Since there will no doubt be a lot of the predictable complaint that this gives an advantage to the kids of people rich enough to buy it, I want to make it clear that this auction is to fund scholarships to the Bing nursery school. Since g

It's not just how good they are. They have a different attitude from students from elite US universities. More practical, less arrogant. I'm not sure whether it's a Canadian thing or a Waterloo thing though.
