Fine, but I thought we were talking about trolley-problem style ethics here?

How about preferring people outside the car over people inside the car? Every time I got the option to swerve into a barrier instead of killing a person I took it. By getting in a car you’re accepting the risk that entails, especially when

As someone else who feels similarly about my own circumcision: I encourage you to work on those feelings of shame and disgust in therapy. Being ashamed of something you can’t change is just going to make you miserable. You may find more pea

Yeah I worked for a company that did all of those things as well, it didn’t change the fact that the interviewer was always less prepared with the second question, and that there’s always wasted time switching between questions. The true ni

Yeah and often the interviewer won’t be prepared with a backup question so you waste time for them to find one. It sucks that it puts the interviewee in a worse position for being honest.

For Instagram here’s what I do: - delete the app - use mobile web only, set my browser to delete all cookies so I have to log in every time I open it Between those two things, my Instagram usage is down from 1+ hours a day to ~10m. Part of

Why do we need to be more productive? I’d take a less productive, more sustainable and relaxed society over what we have now.

Assuming what you said is true, why is that relevant here? Many people (myself included) discover they have ADHD as an adult but that doesn’t mean their ADHD symptoms _started_ when they were an adult.

You shouldn’t feel negative about it, the article doesn’t say anywhere that you should feel negative about it, where are you getting that? Instead of asking you to feel guilty about who you are, we’re asking you to consider the differences

I think the missing piece is the harm being done to others constantly by bad actors (not just people, also institutions, should have clarified that in my first comment). By doing harm to those bad actors, you’ve potentially mitigated harm t

During my last job search, one of my criteria was the company has to basically do no harm, that meant: - no adtech/data collection - no social media - no gig economy - no defense/surveillance I ended up choosing between a few ente

Some people don’t think lying to and stealing from bad people is unethical. It sounds like you disagree, that’s probably the core of your confusion.

I use an RSS feed. No idea how posts are filtered or sorted because sometimes I see flagged posts (which I like to see). I have an account and usually only comment with replies, and rarely participate in conversations past a single reply (s

I think making it as easy as possible to take extended mental health time off is important. My last job would go on and on about how you should take a “mental health day” if you need it, but what if you need a mental health six months? Also

I know you’re just making a joke, but the premise is a off. The queer community is a community because we are all sexual minorities. Asexual people obviously fit that description.

This is not something that’ll happen in the short term, but consider abandoning the idea that your life needs to be more significant than anyone else’s. I found I’m much happier and more secure when I began to think of others more as a coll

I think “need” might be too absolutist of a term. But yeah, not having a device connected to the internet (which is what we’re talking about here, not a supplemental device to your MacBook or whatever) makes life a lot harder. So no, it’s n

I think we probably have a difference of opinion of what problem we should solve. Correct me if I’m wrong, but this sounds like the problem you want to solve: drug users and homeless people make you feel unsafe, and you want to feel more sa

I live in SF and think that there’s an okay amount of police. I don’t want enhanced police presence. Increased social services sounds like a better way to spend that money to me.

Let’s experiment then, and go for a couple years where all advertising is banned. Then we can regroup and decide if our needs are still being met without ads.

It sounds to me like we have a difference of opinion on how to make change that’s unlikely to be resolved over a hn discussion. That’s okay! My point is just that people who say “both sides are bad” aren’t throwing up their hands in defeat.

I don’t think arguing both parties are corrupt disarms us. Instead, I see it as a rallying cry to either upend the system or to work outside of it. Some examples of political action (that work!) outside of the party system: - participating

That is probably true! I think there’s a case to be made that art is in the eye of the beholder, and that anything can be art depending on how it’s perceived. The meaning still feels accidental though, not that far off from thinking a rando
