I think any decent art is trying to communicate something, That’s a core part of what makes art, art. So I think it’s way off to say that AI has “solved” art. It’s got the aesthetics part almost solved but that’s about it. I’m not sure what

I have seen a ton of AI art, a lot of it impressive, but I’ve never seen a piece generated by a computer that had any significant meaning behind it that the human artist didn’t give to it. So AI hasn’t solved art at all really.

I don’t think we should hold people to “the logical conclusion” of all of their beliefs. We are not robots. We are capable of believing something without willing to go to the ends of the earth to be consistent with that belief. For example,

I think there’s another layer that’s not present with the epilepsy case. With epilepsy, it’s an unintentional and tangential side effect of a new technology. Engagement apps instead take advantage of our mental shortcomings as a core part o

I am definitely anti facial recognition in general, precisely because of your second point. If I felt there were reasonable incentives for recognition to stay offline/individual scale that would be fine with me. But obviously we’re hea

I think the breach of privacy is giving an almost trillion dollar corporation free training data via my face and name combination. I don’t mind an individual knowing this information, but I’d rather that individual not hand that data over t

I didn’t read that as an assumption, I thought it was a genuinely good tip. Some people (especially function over form types like myself and many other computer people) don’t make hygiene/appearance a priority. This turns people off. S

I took the parent’s suggestion to mean they’re asking for a chronological news feed instead of one that prioritizes engagement. So not censorship or anything like that.

Bob Apetit is consistently good for any American or Italian basics. Biscuits, pies, tomato sauce, Omelettes, chili, just about any Italian pasta dishes, anything like that. They’re also written well and are pretty easy to follow without lon

I think Gavin’s probably an ass but don’t see anything wrong with being anti-work in general. I would be pro work if most work was meaningful, but am generally anti-work because most of it is exploitative and we do far too much of it in the

There’s a lot of original content (animations and games mostly) that only lives in .swf format. It would be nice to keep flash around if just for archival purposes.

I don’t do this and it seems like a hassle but it is an interesting question: would this be more or less private than a single device? One thing I can think of is most tracking algorithms probably assume each user has a single cell phone (e

I have no interest in helping a trillion dollar company beyond the bare minimum to access the services I need. I’d rather they figure out how to improve their services with more ethical (and controllable!) privacy practices.

I’m glad it’s working for you, but there are a couple of additional things to keep in mind outside of your specific situation: 1) not everyone has the same comfort level asking for PTO. And that distribution is not random, so your company b

Not to mention June 2020 was only a few months into a pandemic unlike the US has seen in most of our lifetimes. I don’t see how you could differentiate between the effects of the pandemic/isolation and working from home.

Yep. I’d rather we have political conversations that were frank about the trade offs and focused on material change. An example: Medicare for all. Bottom 90% will save money, top 10% will lose money, healthcare system will be free at point

I’m really surprised by the noise levels. They say 65db flyover and 70db landing which is quieter than just about every (personal) drone [1]. I wonder how they’re getting those numbers. Like at what distance are they measuring from? I find

I’m reading Tom Sharpling’s memoir right now and he mentions noticing as a teenager that his comedic skillset was better than his peers. One thing that stuck out to me was that he’s able to string one thought to another easier than most. I

This kid was in the top half of his class. I don’t think the personal responsibility bit holds up when literally half a school’s population has this issue. At that point it’s systemic, not individual.

Men should have an easy opt-out of a child’s life if they don’t want to have the child, it’s ridiculous that they don’t. I don’t think you’ll find many pro-choice people that disagree with you on that. But that unfairness doesn’t make it ri
