Sure: Here are some numbers based on affiliate network stats, from the affiliate side: Amateur Match conversion rate is between 14-22%, paying out an average EPC between $0.70-$1.07. If they can afford to pay more than $1 per click and stil

Make it an adult dating site...it has the makings of a strong brand. The significant type-in traffic will help get over the network effect issues that plague most dating sites, and your traffic is very targeted- people looking for sex(or at

You got it. As an advertiser/agency, US traffic is worth significantly more to me than international traffic, and I'm willing to pay a premium for it. Facebook growth in the US is slowing, and international traffic is not doing well. In som

People build apps because it's easy. If you're a half decent developer building an app, you _can't fail_ and that is huge. Getting people to actually pay you for something is hard and fraught with uncertainty and danger. No wonder most peop

I strongly disagree. I think marketing skills are incredibly in demand in an early stage startup, even more so than technical skills! Look at this recent HN post and what people would want to read about most: http://news.ycombinator.com/it

Thanks for sharing your numbers, they are refreshingly honest. I wonder if conversion rate from free to paid accounts is similar in other industries. If so, the numbers are quite sobering. If even a successful, highly targeted and well mark

Maybe I'm being pedantic, but real marketing is user acquisition. Contacting blogs is PR and it has very little to do with marketing(maybe with the exception of positioning). If your marketing strategy is to contact blogs and tweet, you don

Keep in mind that, except for niche sites, purely ad-supported isn't really a viable business model. Even Facebook, which can attract brand advertisers who are willing to pay a premium, is generating less than $2/year per active user in rev

You seem to be conflating driving traffic and monetizing. I mostly talk about paying money to sites like Google to drive traffic. You can only do this effectively if you are selling something. Unless you have a Bing-size budget, it's near i

Nice to see a fellow UW-Madison alum on HN. Do you think being based in Wisconsin hurt your chances of success? I recently moved from Madison to San Francisco, and the difference in the startup scene is tremendous.
