You're correct, they're most definitely not projects that an investor would invest in. However, if I am going to invest in someone, I want to know they can code . I want to look at programs they wrote while they were in college, or worki

The ability to recognize talented programmers and programs is pretty rare. This is why software projects with founders that can write usually succeed, because the responsibility of selling good code usually falls on the programmer (think L

Zed seems to have a freaky ability not only to implement high quality code himself, but to find high quality code written by others, absorb it, and then explain it. Strikes me as the qualities that make a successful angel investor.

If by it you mean the original thread and/or the parent comment to mine, then yes. Fairly simple to infer the subject on the post from these two pieces of information.

Same thought process for me, but I decided not to read. I doubt more than 5% of the community thinks they can reimplement StackOverflow in a weekend.

I hear that. At my current job (large defense contractor-- team of 50+ programmers), programmer productivity is measured by lines of code committed per day. There was a day where I actually removed 100 lines of code and rewrote it in 50.

Well written code is approchable without constructs like UML. The problem with most 'programmers' is that they don't think they should be doing hard programming each day, every day. Yes, experienced hackers make it look easy, but it took

I downvoted your comment. It is not well reasoned, or even properly contrary. It's whiny and weak. Please don't do this again. Obviously I don't believe my comment is whiny and weak, but I'll take whiny and weak over condescending and abr

Comments aren't even comparable to stories in terms of signal to noise ratio. Also, I'm not happy about the fact that I violated the guidelines, but I felt it necessary.

I can count over 100 tools essential to many hackers. The *nix userland alone is certainly several hundred. How about the release notes for all the languages we use? Or perhapes the editors and IDEs? Also, if you want one central locatio

Great, 4 of the top spots taken up by Firefox, PHP, Wireshark, and Virtualbox release notes. I know we've had this debate before, but I don't see why anyone wants 15% of their news to be release notes. If I care about these projects (and

For the skeptics, consider books that are availible free online but sell well (Practical Common Lisp comes to mind). People are paying for the distribution method, not the content.

Hrm. So on the one hand, your personal beliefs prevent you from using a computer that is completely controled and locked down, but because everyone else is doing it for phones, it's ok then? I'm not criticizing Jeff for buying an iPhone,

Not sure if this is legit or not, but the possibility that it could be true is why I have all my social networking completely open. Eliminating the illusion of privacy forces people to act accordingly.
