There is a very good Lawfare podcast with the Bellingcat investigator on that https://www.lawfareblog.com/lawfare-podcast-rid-and-toler-la... which goes into more details on this.

Yes, that matches well my experience with NSF (in astrophysics). Most goes to the University in overheads + grad student + (maybe) postdoc, and a little bit to cover your summer salary (which is an insane concept if you ask me).

It's a weird news. For sure there must be plenty of people who for say 10M$ would find the vulnerability or reverse engineer the whole thing.

Nowhere in my contract or in anyone else's contract (as far as I know) it is written that I need to referee papers. People do it as a service to the community. And I don't necessarily ask to be payed for that, I was just answering

* I absolutely agree that publicly funded research should not be behind paywalls, but right now with MNRAS it is not. Pretty much everyone puts paper on arxiv and people in the UK had to deposit papers into university repositories anyway wh

This is bad news masquerading as good news. Now they force you to pay 2.3k GBP to publish an article. Previously it was free, unless you wanted it to make it immediately accessible on the website. People in astrophysics always did put arti

I guess defending your country is called "offensive purposes". Also last time I heard Starlink is restricted to Ukraine's territory. Why then SpaceX is deciding to curb its use for drone is beyond me.
