I'm not sure I buy this argument. People still need to learn that 2+2=4, derivative of sine is cosine and similarly simple things in non-STEM fields. Sure these questions can be answered by ChatGPT trivially, but it doesn't mean t

I'm sorry but I call BS on this. You claimed a specific figure 3x. I'm not claiming things are particularly great in Edinburgh, but people on the council's waiting list are not necessarily homeless.

You don't seem to quite understand the current cosmological models. You don't need special cases for every galaxy. Instead you 'just' need to add a weakly interacting particle with the right density (30% of critical). T

I do know that many on HN are critical of twitter, but since the start of the war with Ukraine, twitter was an essential way to get fresh news/analysis of the situation. Therefore it's a pity that twitter is going down. And I do t

In this case I kinda care if too much money was spent on rebranding, because OUP publishes science books and journals, so I don't really want pay extra of page charges for that...

I don't like it as it seems to remind me of the James Bond intro. But it seems most (or at least a large fraction) of people don't really like rebrands. So it probably doesn't really matter (unless unreasonable amount of mon

A year and a half ago the university has migrated to Oracle's People and Money system with all the finance department moving to the system a few months ago. Since then due to issues with the system PhD student stipend payments have bee

I always try to separate facts, deduction and values. * We can agree and disagree about the facts. This is the worst case and it is probably not worth discussing and try to change someone's mind if we disagree about basic facts. * One

That sounded plausible to me initially, but then other news came in (as well as continued reports of issues with starlink). But it is possible that there is nothing sinister here.

Call me conspiratorial, but I do find it weird that first there were these 'peace plans' from Musk, than reports of Starlink problems in Ukraine, then claims about the conversations with Putin (that Musk denied), followed now by t

In the end I believe the Bayesian inference is more straightforward to implement and understand if you can afford computationally sampling of the posterior. So I think at least in physics there is a shift towards Bayesian approaches.

I don't think this is surprising. If the utility function that is optimized by companies is profitability, the typical lifetime just above the warranty time is the result. In some sense that's expected from companies that have sha
