I wanted to reply something snarky about how the web has become exceptionally bloated even compared to other technologies but then I pictured an earliest-era TV broadcaste being shown in a modern TV show in 1080p and it's comparably in

So it seems streaming sites like Twitch are really the only major ones left sticking with Flash. I assume there is a reason? Despite Mozilla's claims, are they really offering a proper alternative?

I figured that. I guess the days where an indie-ish indie developer would ever touch the bottom-level graphics API are over. Somehow that just seems a little sad.

Maybe that's old-fashioned but I'm just not a big fan of the "just use Unity" argument. Game engines tend to be horribly bloated, it's in their nature. Plus you're now dependent on a costly, proprietary black-b

Jesus christ. I understand that Vulkan is very, very niche but as someone who doesn't know much more than the basics of maybe setting up an OpenGL window to draw anything, the "drawing a triangle part" just seems insane! I kn

I heard that "runner's high" only sets in when you train hard and for a long time. To make that clear, you're saying it's actually a sign of you having gone too far?

Since I never quite figured this out: Why are there no real other browsers on iOS? Is it policy or simply not feasible?

I like Apple's mobile devices but ever since the iPad turned out to be a giant iPhone instead of a true desktop/mobile hybrid, I'm scared as hell that they will lock down their desktop/laptop ecosystem the way they do wi

I know we're on hacker news but I don't quite get how you put "technology" in these lists. The trend in Europe is very, very obviously about the immigration crisis. Which, if not racist, is at least a nationalist issue

How is an anti-aliased line easier to read for a computer? It should be fairly easy to find lines and use those to get vanishing points for orientation. Distance of enemies should be more or less a mapping of screen height, since you'r

IMO the analogy is correct for Go players as that's mostly a "sport". There's real cases of similar technology putting people out of jobs, for example I recently read that more and more finance firms more or less complet

Well, we're on hackernews, we like the tech stuff. For most of the world, this news is where people learn about Go and the human player's "humiliation" (whether or not the Go community sees it that way) is the story. I&#

I like that analogy a lot! It's not like "playing Go really well" ever solved any real-world problem, it has always been a competition among humans. What should change, there?

I like the idea that ad-driven business are not sustainable. Ads are manipulative almost by definition and the world would probably be better without them (even though it's hard to make an argument for disallowing people to present the

I just wonder if there's rationality behind not changing this (by either switching to a different language, fixing it or, hardcore mode, create a new one). I know from a very, very different field that you often have to deal with decad

Why isn't it a subset of OpenGL, then? Maybe that's what's confusing? It sounds like the most typical usage would be to implement things in OpenGL and then do a few hardcore optimization tasks in Vulkan. Why not add that acce

AFAIK it's mostly a performance booster in some niche cases where low level GPU access is the bottleneck. I've seen VR mentioned, for example. The end user will see better framerates, I suppose.

That's a big "NOT", though, for such subtle semantics and IMO more confusing than helpful. It's by the same people, for the same thing. It's set to replace OpenGL in the long term, no? I'd say that the only rea

There's one in a thousand chances and there's 1-2^-80 chances. Wouldn't that be some "electrons in the universe" level coincidence? Believing in that borders on religion.

Looks like this jsfiddle just doesn't do per-pixel z-sorting (which I wouldn't have expected from browser 3D effects) but in my brain that shouldn't be an issue with cubes (no polygons overlapping).
