Kids need adults to show them how to play? Holy crap, what are we coming to? From the article, it sounds like we're coming to, indeed are in, a first-world industrial and information economy where we've learned that children's natural lev

This is dated May 21, 2009. Is this here because it was prescient and we're seeing exactly what was described in the article? Or is it here to show how wrong this guy was? These aren't smart-mouthed internet questions. I really don't know w

I think the difficulty lies in the multiple meanings of 'programmer.' My interest in programming stems from wanting to use them to solve problems, not from theoretical interest in how computers work. Most of my colleagues in the UW engineer

I coined the following inversion to highlight the inherently manipulative use of the no-I-in-team saw: There may be no 'I' in 'team,' but you can't spell 'team' without 'me.' Am I the only one who sees the no-I-in-team chestnut as obviously

On the one hand, this seems like a clever bit of lateral thinking with tangible benefits, so it makes me happy. On the other hand, a lateral move had to be found to ditch a...wait for it... patent absurdity , so I'm a little miffed that the

The fact that you accept the possibility that those people at the party and stadiums are masking their misery with beer and baseball says more about yourself than it does about the author. You seem to agree, but don't want to come right ou

Go to a party. Listen to the laughter, that brittle-tongued voice that says fun on the surface and fear underneath. Feel the tension, feel the pressure. Nobody really relaxes. They are faking it....These are not people who are at peace wit

The interesting thing, to me, is that this effect could serve as an explanation for the phenomenon described yesterday in http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=580209 . Namely, the independent study technique might naturally encourage this

An interesting point, but I think there are some other subtleties here that are going unnoticed. If we look at this from the standpoint of transactional analysis (and contextualize this narrative from the airline employee's point of view),

First off, this isn't Digg or Reddit. Snarky, shallow, one-line summaries are generally not welcome here. Second, your stupid summary is not supported by the text of the article. people [sic] are irrational and make stupid decisions. Ther
