Hacker News DC Meetup has had a lot of success bringing the community together. I'd encourage anybody in the DC area to check it out - http://meetup.hackernewsdc.org/ . I see no reason why people shouldn't do it in other cities as well. Ha

You pay yourself a reasonable living salary, based on location and living expenses. It usually has to be approved by the board, but so long as it's reasonable, you should be OK. The idea is that you're not getting rich off your salary, you

I've thought for a while that people need to take hiring advice given by 37Signals and Fog Creek (Joel on Software) in perspective. It's a very different experience hiring when there are thousands of programmers who would die to work on you

Name brand sites (NewYorkTimes.com, ESPN.com, CNN.com) are rumored to get CPM rates much higher than that. I agree, however, that Gizmodo is probably not getting those rates. In addition, publishers usually get high rates on their direct me

Yeah, the article was completely pointless. Question some friends and I were discussing today: if this issue were to go to court, what grounds would Adobe have?

Agreed. I'm working on a game for release in a couple months, and last week had wrapped up a two week project building a nice system for scripting game objects using Lua. I'm now in the process now of scrapping it and going back to C++ for

Second the vote for OmniFocus. The key for me was synchronization between multiple computers and the iPhone. The iPhone app seems a bit like an afterthought (it's very slow to update, even when using their suggested tweaks), but synching be

That's a misconception. If you design your schema properly, evolving it isn't a problem. We use protocol buffers (forced to because we're integrating with Google) and in the schema, everything is marked as optional so they can add or remove

Aside from the popup on first launch, there's no help screen, so I can't figure out how to arrange things properly. I tried visiting the gallery and it's not sized for an iPhone screen, so I have to scroll around to see the entire picture.
