Worse is better vs plan carefully is this balance that shows up in every creative field. It’s in writing, in physics, art, everything. Do you try and think carefully up front about what you want to and engineer carefully against what you im

I feel similarly about my 2019 GTI. The fundamentals are available without the touch screen, but you still have CarPlay. The later model GTIs went fully touch screen and capacitive touch buttons everywhere, including the steering wheel. Dis

The site has been flooded with 4chan users saying the n-word, and there are no attempts to stop this. This is the new Twitter. This means it’s trashed. It’s like trying to save a piece of raw meat left out in the sun. Why put a single shred

I guess I take issue with most climate protests that are meant to “generate awareness” at this point. I think people are largely saturated. People are about as aware as they’re willing to be. The question is “what do you do?” There’s not re

"An advantage of having Gentoo as the base for this distro is its package manager, Portage, which has a system of enabling/disabling compile-time options for applications. This means application binaries can be tailored to the use

Is schematic entry where most of the effort and complexity is when doing board design? Will JITX address the layout part of the design pipeline as well down the line?

So, how far are they willing to go? Will they host neo-nazis? Will they host far right conservatives? I wonder if they'd be up for hosting pro-BDS speakers or out-and-out socialists or communists. Freedom of speech is never, ever given

I'm immediately suspicious when I see this map of the world with countries shaded by how "free" they are. What are the units of freedom? What's the color scale? How is freedom measured and who is measuring it? Why does i

It's a simple one but freebsd's <sys/queue.h> is short, well designed, and really useful.

This is never how it works out. The ticket price is set to what people will pay for it. Everything else — ads and all, are just additional profit.

No, we’re addicts to novelty. I’ve met very very few scientists who do it for social good. Maybe for some abstract notion of progress. Think about what motivated the physicists behind the manhattan project. Was it for the good of the countr

I have no idea why you think reality agrees with you. I “believe” in superposition, entanglement, and the like because I’ve tested it myself in a lab with a six qubit quantum computer I built.

This is the typical stephen wolfram thing where he read feynman's proposal for quantum computing and thought about it by himself since then, and then, I would guess, figured that the experimentalists haven't had much to contribute

This seems a bit icky as you move away from the origin. There’s no promises for how fast the series converges and how well it does yea far out and so on and so forth. This reminds me a bit of harmonic balance which is a great, well behaved

This isn't how things are priced. They ask what they can get. If they could ask for more money for the car, why wouldn't they?

Being a cop doesn't even break the top 20 most dangerous jobs. It's about 4 times more dangerous than the average job. I don't understand this "life on the line" nonsense
