I think fear of litigation is probably a significant factor. I have a friend who practices labor and employment law and he's kept on retainer at a few big companies to field calls such as "can we fire this person and not get sued?". They li

I just looked up my state's (Illinois) welfare application[1] and it doesn't mention anywhere that having dependents is a necessary condition to receive it. If being a care-giver is the policy, they do a good job of hiding it. Also, those c

I think it's a vicious cycle. The more blog drama (AA killed my dog!) which gets through, the more people who like blog drama are drawn to the site and up-vote it. If I were PG, I would look at the data and try to categorize the type of sub

Maybe this story is riding the coat-tails of the AA story about how "big companies just don't get it". Who knows.

Precisely. I remember a psychology professor who did some consulting for marketing firms telling us: "No matter how sophisticated your tastes or your decision buying process are, there's a marketing profile targeting you". Don't ever under-

Spare the boycott for a cause which merits it. AA just lost a competent and passionate employee and announced themselves as a lousy place to work for creative people.

The value added over a "dumb" directory is that you can use ratings to inform your decision instead of taking the service provider's word of being "the best in town". I'm not making this stuff up, tons of people use Yelp, Zaggats, GetSatisf

I was thinking the same thing. Although when you think about it, fundamentally it's no different than Yelp or Zaggats. It's just another level of service layered on top of a directory.
