That does explain a lot. I had a coworker at my last job who was appalled that I could quit and not have other work lined up (I just went and bummed around Zurich for the summer). This guy was in his late 30's, single, had a low-level IT job and plainly said that the only reason he gets out of bed in the morning is to come to work (a job which he bitched about endlessly). I could never understand the psychology of it.
