Power efficiency and size reduction go hand in hand. The gate capacitance is reduced at lower geometry, and you can also reduce the core voltage. Both of which directly contribute to power. The only other way to reduce power is by clock gat

In all fairness the article says: "Despite its official sound, it is not actually a scientific rule like Newton’s laws of motion. Instead, it describes the pace of change in a manufacturing process that has made computers exponentially

I can imagine a few ways that you could. Say you installed a media player. Now you'll have to convince a jury that you didn't install a media player just so you could watch videos while driving, and therefore were distracted at th

I've design with Intel Atoms and ARM chips. Atoms are very bloated and require a lot of external support to get up and running. Intel's firmware/boot support is atrocious. They still have PC OEM's in mind. ARM chips on t

I'm not disagreeing about the work that RPi is doing. I was addressing this part: "getting a solid, reliable kernel with open source drivers is far from easy." If the chip vendor doesn't provide the drivers then the inte

KV would be stored in DDR memory in this case, which on an FPGA you can have many channels all working in parallel. In fact you could design a system that could saturate a 10Gbps network link and give you deterministic, 1ms or less, I/

In an FPGA based design you can have many more memory channels and have them be dedicated for this purpose. Packet processing can also be done on the wire, giving you deterministic low latency access to memory storage.

I mostly agree with you but in the case of key/value store the problem is mostly an I/O issue, not CPU performance. It is an architectural issue. An FPGA can give you deterministic , consistent storage at very low latency -- ev

SystemVerilog supports structs and unions. Synthesizable constructs are up to the synthesis tool to infer, and they are very clear as to how they work. Any HDL language will be confusing to someone who isn't used it because you are def

HDL is a very different paradigm than Javascript. You aren't writing a program. You are describing hardware which is why it is synthesized into gates and not compiled. They are apples and oranges. The closest analog I can think of is v

Bluespec is SystemVerilog extensions, so it still falls under Verilog support. Bluespec compiler spits out Verilog RTL for it to be fed into other tools, like Xilinx's synthesizer. So yes you can use Bluespec with Xilinx/Altera to

Yes. You would need a warrant for that. I meant in this case they could have easily obtained one. The had the IP, which is how they got IMSI. I imagine you'd use Stingrays when you want to cast a broad net, i.e. who are the persons who

I'm not sure an IMSI catcher would be needed. Cellphone companies CAN triangulate his location for E911 purposes with reasonable accuracy. All LEO would need is to put the apartment block under surveillance for a few days and figure ou

I agree with GBI for the interim, but one thing everyone is forgetting is that we're resource bound as a race. GBI will deal with the distribution issue but not overall consumption. And I hate to say it but the more prosperous the aver

Polyfuses are temperature driven and will reset within a few seconds. USB ports on non-cheap bare-minimum laptops use a chip in monitoring the current draw and can block that port. The OS can re-enable the port right away but I believe OS X
