The "1%" is actually an interesting choice of number. Most NYC media types are friends with very wealthy people. They needed to pick a number large enough that it didn't seem like they were attacking people they know.

More accurately: Apple doesn't bother with early adopter and enthusiast technologies. They wait until the tech is mass market ready and polish it. There's no real reason for Apple to get into VR yet. They can make a deal with O

I don't know the specifics of the algorithm that HN uses, but reddit used to factor in 'post velocity'. Assuming HN does something similar then a relatively small number of quick early upvotes can send something to the front

There aren't really that many journalism jobs out there. Especially compared to the massive number of J-School grads that come on the the market each year. Journalists look at Gawker writers and naturally think "There but for the

It's certainly Europe's problem. Overpopulation, not war, is what's really driving the migrant crisis.

The US can fix most of the H1B problems by just giving them out quarterly based on salary. This will mostly damage employers abusing the system -- I doubt this hog processor really vitally needs all of these "Manager Trainees" ear

People focus far too much on different languages. The fact that Android and iOS have very different UI libraries is usually a much bigger problem. Xamarin's big selling point is a cross platform ui library.

I am so glad to see someone write this. I've worked with too many designers who stack modals onto modals.

Javascript SPA applications get less respect from business owners than they deserve. People see JS and throw their JQuery & some CSS developers at it. Or they use their backend PHP devs who've never written code that runs for long

The problem goes back to 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest' and the 'Deinstitutionalisation' movement in the 70s. Basically they shut down psychiatric facilities instead of fixing them. Now no one has a good solutio

p7zip is not anyone's first guess the first time they see a .7z file. And I don't have to download anything to open a .zip or .tgz. Compressing a directory is a solved problem with standard solutions. You really should have a rea

The size difference is trivial so there's no real benefit to .7z files. However it's a non standard format so I have to hunt around for what the CLI tool is called, then install it, the look up the options... Sure that's not

There's a famous joke that "fascist" in politics just means "I don't like you" It's just an ill-defined insult at this point. George Orwell had interesting things to say. http://orwell.ru/
