I’m just now looking for a house. So far I’ve been throwing extra money into vanguard funds. It seems like waiting for a housing crash doesn’t make sense because stocks will drop too. My buying power would be about the same before and after

I’ve gone months without being productive. For me, it’s caused by a mix of ADD and depression, which results in no feeling of achievement or dopamine when I finish tasks. What gets me started is usually the stress of somebody needing someth

Several senior employees left the company to form new studios, taking several people with them. Ben Brode and Mike Morheim for example.

I went to college for art, but had to drop out due to high expenses. I became a self taught programmer, starting with game development. That didn’t pay off, of course, but it was intrinsically interesting which allowed me to learn useful te

Beyond needing to visit the pharmacy monthly because vyvanse can’t be delivered, my life didn’t change much. I still have just as much trouble focusing as usual. Maybe I should increase the dosage..

I briefly (3 semester) went to an art school where the president’s motto is, “there’s no such thing as a starving artist.” I learned my major has a rate of <10% of being hired after graduation. I saw a several graduates working minimum w

I find that pouring boiling water into coffee grounds makes a bitter brew. Instead I pour boiling water into a metal container, which is enough to drop it a couple degrees, and then mix grounds into it.

I went from SDE to an escalation engineer. Programming experience is helpful but not required, and I’m only writing code when my team needs tools. I’m on call six weeks per year. It’s a better work/life balance than the SDEs I work wit

How's working in battle.net? I interned on a dev team in 2014 and the general consensus was that work conditions were pretty rough. Is that still the case?

He's hiring a lot of non-devs lately. When I look at the new hire emails for software devs I see a lot more master's than bachelor's - none without a degree. That's anecdotal though, so it might just be my department.

I was hired without a BS. I had 4 years prior experience and applied as a SDE. I got hired as a support engineer and stayed for two years. When I told my manager switching to SDE they said the path was support -> SRE -> Sysadmin ->

I can relate, but unfortunately have no real strategy for overcoming this. I've ended up leaving behind the things I used to care so much about, just to avoid the feelings. The feelings only became overwhelming after several months of

Does any engineer over mid-level actually still code for most of their day? I'm sure there are exceptions, but most senior engineers I've worked with spend most of their time communicating with other teams, laying out architecture

I've worked as a developer oncall, and as dedicated support engineer oncall. You're absolutely right - management will absolutely refuse to allot time to improvements and bug fixes when there are features to make. It's frustr

While I agree that a simple figure does a good job at explaining what a pointer is, it takes quite a bit longer to develop an intuitive sense of how to effectively work with pointers. In that case it's the more examples, the better.

I second the sentiment of wishing design was more valued. It's a shame, really, that the majority of engineers look down on something that is so essential to customer experience.

When I was younger I was able to go into interviews with the mindset of, "it's their decision and it's okay if they don't think I'm a good fit." It made interviewing easy, and in a lot of cases even enjoyable.
