I'm a bit confused about this. I distinctly remember the news about the earnings warning (due to difficulty of monetizing mobile users) coming out before the IPO. So there can be no complaint there. The article suggests that the problem is

PayPal without a doubt. You hear horror stories about both (for Google e.g. http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=2483609 , http://ask.metafilter.com/178634/How-to-get-Google-Checkout-... ) . Granted- more about PayPal, but they handle a l

So if the bankers started wearing hoodies they'll become Meritocratic? Portraying 'not wearing a suit' as challenging the status quo is a bit of an exaggeration. Maybe Gandhi challenged the status quo with his choice of outfit, but a billio

I'm going to stick my neck out here and say that I think he's being rude and arrogant. Yes, he's in a position of power, and could turn up to his meetings wearing only a cunningly positioned silk scarf, and it would have no effect on the ba

I think this issue with mobile users (harder to monetize) ties into the big problem for Facebook over the next 5-10 years. To turn into a profitable company, valued at (say) a hundred billion dollars, they need to start making more money. N

Hi, I've done exactly this (although my full time job is great, and I love it). I think it is a really great way of dipping your toes in the water while keeping your risk low. Time management: I get up at 6, allowing me an hour and a half's

From what I understand, bubbles bursting in the past (e.g. Tulips, Dotcom) have been triggered by a specific event rather than a new, more exciting outlet for money. In the Tulip bubble it was a failed auction in Haarlan, in the DotCom bubb

True- but in this case the classes looked relatively simple (i.e. they were carrying data, but not operating on it) Taking the interface approach further, your classes that operate on your data would take in objects by interface e.g.: publi

If I were solving this problem in C# I'd probably lean towards defining specific properties of objects in interfaces, rather than just through a type hierarchy. So we might have the interface ISecurityWithIsin , IOption etc. This has the ad

In the UK if you get caught speeding/running a red light by a camera, the ticket gets sent to the registered owner of the car. You can either take the ticket, or tell them who was driving. You cannot say 'it wasn't me, but I won't tell you

Really? Are you talking gross or net profit? I would be surprised to find many software products where the gross profit margin would be less than 50%.

This is exactly what I do. Knock up a landing page, and stick up an Adwords campaign. Its a great way to find and engage some initial customers, who will be able to help you shape your product as it develops. Also gives you a great idea on

I disagree. It is not possible to build a valuable business without achieving profitability. Over a long-enough time period, the value of a non-profitable business will revert to zero. If a business is valuable, it is because the market (or

Before going 'legal' (especially as you seem to have nothing specific in writing), why not talk to your manager, or the most appropriate person about it. Explain, why you're worried ("We agreed there would be options grants, and I know you'

In the UK at least there's a decent market for 2nd hand books via 2nd hand bookshops and charity shops (not on the scale of the used game market though I think). We always try to buy furniture 2nd hand- for the price of a chipboard IKEA war
