This is also a good way to do nothing for two weeks because teams can no longer efficiently coordinate. It's an incredibly childish approach to reducing unnecessary meetings, and I'm highly skeptical that it has any benefits at al

This is my position too. What I'm looking for in a twitter alternative is something public that I can post to the entire world, and search. If I want to post to my friends I already use Signal and vastly prefer that to something like M

This has always been true. The old fashion way of doing it was called "getting together in person someplace private." Yes Signal makes it a bit easier, but also general technology makes it harder too.

I don't think that poster is saying to ban Signal. A minority of people want to ban Signal. As it is Signal is legal and that's good. Democracy is also good. And yes people should participate in democracy rather than simply postin

And that's why governments are more complex than straight democracy. I love how people bring up the tyranny of the majority as some counter to modern democratic government, all the while providing no viable alternative. What, do you wa

It's not lost, it's just not relevant. Build is generally done in CI/CD often on the same OS as arch as deploy. But even then, with the rise of languages that can trivially cross compile it's just not as important as it

People can select multiple editors, so you can't sum them like that. E.g. people on windows could use Visual Studio AND Notepad++. All this says is that at least 10% use Mac because xcode only runs on the Mac, and at least 32% use Wind

Among many others, it's easy to point out one simple example. I've talked to many many many many americans who are reluctant to even go to a dr for a simple checkup because they cannot afford it. That is barbaric, that you even ha

I have a high school friend who is the same way. It's beyond traumatizing for his friends and family. Many of them live in fear. Same story, neither confining him nor forcibly medicating him are options, so he roams around, unable to h

Twitter at least made an effort to combat misinformation, while Mastodon apparently doesn't want journalists yet allows antivaxers free reign. Leaving moderation as a free for all is not the sort of platform I'm interested in.

Another reason why Mastodon will never be popular. It's already a bastion of misinformation. No thanks.

Every department has it's own politics and issues, but individual experiences don't mean the whole is wrong and certainly doesn't mean the idea itself is wrong. For example, there was a case at the school I got my PhD at wher

Yes, this is considered ok. It can also be the case that you have School 1 (PhD) -> School 2 (professor) -> School 1 (Professor). But that's still fairly uncommon.

No, it's not. Compared to industry, it is very normal to challenge each other in academia. So much so that many people moving from academia to industry are often told they are too "mean" or "aggressive" in meetings

I have a PhD, and yes this is exactly the reason Universities don't want to hire their own. It has zero to do with "being too good to hire their own students" and everything to do with diversity of thought. I 100% agree with
