I've been using Rancher desktop and it seems to work fine for me. I don't notice anything being particularly slow and no lockups or anything. If Mac wasn't an option I really don't know if I'd try using Linux on the desktop vs Windows with WSL. I have nothing but horrible memories when I had to use Linux on the desktop.
