I included the example that I did because betterunix's comment included two trigger phrases for me: "big trouble if they skip class" and "produce compliant people". I've been teaching CS for more than 15 years; the brilliant but unconventio

I'm not tokenadult, but I can offer my two cents. Assuming they're being paid "enough", paying teachers more does almost nothing to improve motivation or performance. There are quite a few studies about this, and my own experience bears tha

I disagree. We teachers have plenty of time to properly assess student work. But we also have to give accurate, consistent and fair grades and usually written feedback as well, and that's what usually takes forever. An hour a day with 30

I think the real problem is that nobody has any good metrics that will work 1) cheaply enough and 2) at scale. Give me 25 students and two hours, and I can write a paragraph for each kid very accurately detailing their strengths and weakn

You don't have 160 students at once. You have 30 students for an hour at a time, then 30 more, six times a day. (Or something similar.)

"Students in America are routinely published for any attempt to learn outside the confines of a narrow curriculum." As a public school teacher, I strongly disagree with your opinion. I suspect your opinion has been formed based on a relativ

I'm on a desktop machine. Also using a 22-inch monitor at 1680x1050. I do not maximize my browser window (mybrowserinfo.com tells me my browser dimensions are currently 1112 x 945). The font size in question looks great to me. I should add

It is a shame. As it stands now, the system "punishes" rule followers who leave the original, uninteresting title and thereby get no traction. But those who rewrite the title to something more obviously relevant get decent views even if the

"How did this even get started?" Well, the Hacker News guidelines[1] say: > Please use the original title, unless it is misleading or linkbait. This rule is frequently violated, because a lot of the times the original title is bad. So s

A good headline is pretty much 'link bait' by definition. If a feature writer mistakenly wrote a terrible headline like yours, I would expect the newspaper editor to fix it before going to press.

This is really cool. I suspect a lot of people didn't get far enough to actually try anything; it took a lot of clicks to start the first note. A suggestion: don't vanish the instructions once the song appears! Once I saw the song loading w

"For every bra a woman buys, she probably buys at least 5 pairs of panties." I beg to differ. I'm a man, and have never bought either bra or panties for my wife, but I have watched at least 100 hours of QVC and HSN (competitor home shoppi

I mean "rarely occurs" in the sense that folks rarely post things with really long lines. Most of us have better sense than that.

Given their respective install bases, I think Android should be the default OS for J. Random Average. I teach in a public school, and a lot of my students have Android phones. The plurality of them have the Samsung Galaxy S III, actually.

I'm a high school computer science teacher, and this is a WONDERFUL idea. I'm totally going to steal it and create a few assignments based on the concept.

It seems like a pretty broad brush to equate "people with workplace filters" with "corporate types". For example, I'm a guy with a CS degree who is a high school teacher. Does that make me a "corporate type"?

I'm not SafeSituation, but the demos don't render for me. Presumably that's a WebGL issue. (Google Chrome 23.0.1271.95 on Ubuntu 12.10) Pointer Lock seems to work fine.

After reading just the title, I was worried. After reading the article, I'm much more optimistic. Figuring out how to scale up tutoring and "why doesn't this code work" might actually make a difference. I'm a high school computer science te

I've always like this quote: "Profanity is the effort of a feeble brain to express itself forcibly." - Spencer W. Kimball Cursing is like salt: judicious use can improve a well-made dish, but overuse doesn't make bad food into good.
