I would recommend getting some in-person customer validation. Since your customers are developers, I would goto the local Tech Meetups and talk with other developers about your product and the pain point you're solving. Performing the

I've been in this exact situation and my advice is to keep going. Either keep building your product and compete with them, or contact them and attempt to merge. But don't give up just because someone else launched first. Only rare

What will happen when everybody uses an Ad Blocker? I can think of two positives; The Advertising Industry will finally wise up and realize that the consumers do not like having Ad's forced upon them interrupting their content. This wi

When it comes down to it, I don't hate Ad's. But I can openly admit that I despise the Ad Experience. You are basically forced to view/hear the Ad. The consumer has no choice. I find it to be a flawed User Experience. I fault

Reminds me of the first Project I did with my Pi (last year) except I was using Squid and two Ethernet Ports (Apple's USB to Ethernet Adapter is basically plug and play with Linux). I eventually did a Wifi version, very similar to this

Unfortunately, not everyone has common sense. Stating the obvious seems like a simple solution. Sorry for the Clutter.

In my opinion, Tools like Cordova (Phonegap) and Titanium exemplify a continuously evolving Grey Area between Web App and Native Mobile App Development. But even with this said; I think it's important to understand the differences betw

I've never been to a PennApps Hackathon, but from what you describe (1000+ people), I'd imagine that it's pretty much impossible for event organizers to prevent this. I think the key here is the 'left unattended' pa

I would recommend getting the hd5770 and trying the 10.8 upgrade before going all out on a build for Mavericks. My experiences with 10.8 on Mac Pro 1.1 (flashed to 2.1) have been hit or miss, and I'm honestly not sure about Mavericks.

I think it would have been better to compare this build to the iMac or the Mini. While I definitely applaud osx86 builds, I don't really find this build comparable to a Mac Pro of any recent generation. I think a much better comparison

My advice would be to focus on the customer and validate. There are so many variables when it comes to big name success stories. It could almost be considered a waste of time to break it down into a success formula, there are just too many

Sometimes it's fun to see what you can do with older hardware. I got an old HP Laptop for free (DV6409US) and decided to turn it into my 2nd Laptop for Startup Weekend / Hackathon events. I put in 4GB of Ram for $60 and installed

I've been in a similar scenario. I bootstrapped my first Startup. It failed, and I lost a lot of money. We developed (in Stealth) an amazing product in the "Ambient Discovery" space. We didn't call it that, but that'

I would recommend The Lean Startup by Eric Reis. I wouldn't want to try and generalize the book, but essentially you propose a hypothesis, and then test your hypothesis using a Build/Measure/Learn feedback loop. This creates

I see where you're coming from, and I've also seen similar results at local StartupWeekend Events. But to me it's more than just the idea and the problem they're solving; It's having the right Team. I've seen m

It is Hackathon Culture after all; Do something because you can, or just to see what is possible. Unfortunately, you guys are getting lots of negative pushback here. Sometimes, it's not what the Tech does, but how you leverage the Tech

The value prop for App.net (in my opinion) relates to User Privacy. This all ties back to the "You are the Product" model of existing Social Networks that leverage the Advertising Industry as their core (or secondary) revenue model. The imp

I'm not trying to get involved with defining what a hackathon is (or isn't), but I do know that Startup Weekend (www.startupweekend.org) has been hosting events that have prizes and winners for quite some time now.
