It's funny. So many people come to HN to get their daily dose of commoditized inspiration. And yet, when it's their turn to help someone out and give real inspiration, they do things like this. I don't think HN is getting worse, really, b

You're right. I really meant to say that Hypernumbers implies something else (an app dedicated to advanced math, perhaps?), not that it isn't descriptive. Insteadsheet would indeed be a ballsy name, incorporating the "We're the anti-Excel/G

I don't like the name. It sounds too technical. How about "Insteadsheet"? Because that's really what you are, right? Edit: Some elaboration. I'm a branding guy, and this site has a branding problem. Hypernumbers doesn't really describe the

I feel like, now that the magic trick has been explained, my world is slightly less full of wonder and excitement. Thanks, I think.

"Like" seems pretty limited on Twitter. News spreads on Twitter, and most of it you can't really "like" without looking like some kind of sociopath. Tweets are also short enough to immediately show their relevance. In theory, anything that'

Awesome. I tried to write something like this, but it was way out of my league. Glad to see someone did it. Used correctly, blur can be really neat in UIs.

To this day, there are people who believe that New Coke was a PR stunt. Often viewed as one of the biggest brand disasters in history, the New Coke quagmire actually had a great effect on Coke: It made people realize how much they loved the

Thanks. I wanted to go with something that wasn't blue. I'm open to any and all ideas on getting the ball rolling-- thanks for that one.

PR firms take note: Deception and conspiracy won't get you very far in the end. I'd hesitate to even call this group a PR firm, though. The Joojoo's launch was mired in image problems. To spend so much time and effort on a misguided publici

If you really believe this, put your money where your mouth is: Tell all of your clients that you do this. Then, report back to us what they think. Somehow I don't think they'll buy the "I was lying to you for your own good" line.

This is unethical. What happens when a client discovers that you've been deceiving them?

It's the featured example in a story about the type of product. Very much a PR win for AirBnB.

I figured they would do this. Everyone claiming they'd do a full-blown recall was nuts. Semi-related: Nintendo is great at this stuff. When Mario Party hit for the N64, a lot of its mini-games required rotating the control stick fast. A lot

Luckily, Monster Quest, Ghost Hunters and all those other shows should satisfy any desire for fiction on the History Channel.

I think you're right about Toyota, but I don't think the opposite extreme is justified either. Apple's flippant handling of the situation just shows that they have a crappy attitude. Sony's the same way; when they got complaints about a sho

Is this a joke that I'm not getting? Scotch tape? Really? "This problem isn't real, but here's how you fix it." He also completely dismisses public perception. Did everyone forget Toyota's mess so quickly? If there's a perceived problem wit

This tweet was clever, but I couldn't help but cringe when I saw it going around Twitter, giving everyone a healthy dose of misinformation. BP said fairly early on in the account's popularity (~20k followers is when I read about it) that th

An analogous question would be "Are you beating your wife?" "Is Twitter censoring?" isn't assuming anything in the question.

I have to give Twitter more credit than that. Politics of the issue aside, censoring anything could seriously hurt Twitter. Even if we're cynical and we don't give them the benefit of a doubt integrity-wise, it's still a stupid move for t

Yeah, the search is still broken. But at least it's showing now? It seems too inconsistent to be active censoring.

I really want to think that this is a technical error. "Israil" was another term that is broken in the search. It's now showing as trending for me. I'm hoping "flotilla" will follow.

Please be a technical error. They could undo a lot of good will (Iran elections, etc) just by censoring this one thing.

The "signup for free" part had me wondering. "Sign up" is the verb, where "signup" is a noun. I wonder if the benefit was just in eliminating the misused word. Most other A/B tests I've seen favor the phrase with "free" in it. It's similar
