I was never actually aware of the "market research" definition; this is the first I've heard of it. At Moz, I've long been looking for a phrase that means "content marketing + white hat SEO + social media + email marketing + conversion rate

That's been my experience. Not only will the blog's pages rank better by being on the main domain, they'll also help the rest of the site's content rank better by bolstering that location's authority. That said, I don't want to suggest this

Yes, you're totally cool to use either site.tld or www.site.tld. I'd recommend using a 301 redirect of one to the other (Google and Bing are pretty good at automatically canonicalizing these, but not perfect). The trouble comes when you seg

Yeah. Have to agree with you here. I just tested this recently , getting a few hundred retweets of an obscure URL ranking on page 4 for an obscure term and it moved to page 2 within a few days. I suspect Google may not be getting Twitter da

This is a good point. One interesting thing we found with the more growth-focused funds (and the growth-focused parts of traditional VCs) is that at high valuations and high dollar amounts in, they tend to look for 3-5X returns, rather than

Yeah - the growth has been quite good. I think this would have let us work faster and more directly on "next big things" - projects that wouldn't have fast ROI, but might be very exciting from a customer value and technology perspective. We

If you read the piece, you can see that we were actually approached by investors in a bunch of geographies - SF, the Valley, Boston, NYC, even San Diego. We ended up signing something with a firm in NY, but were not geographically biased in

It's actually a legacy thing. When I first started Moz in 2003, it was just a blog, with no commercial intent, so I redirected the .com to the .org and kept it there. It's likely that we'll move to .com in the near future, though. Even with

I'm hugely passionate about SEO, but, perhaps anachronistically, I'd urge you to go with something brandable over something that's merely a keyword match. Of course, if you can do both, and you love the name, that's awesome, but personally,

Hi - Rand here, CEO at Moz. This story's inaccurate in a few ways: 1) We have not raised any capital. I posted about seeking investment here - http://randfishkin.com/blog/113/inflection-points-bravery-vs... - but no developments since. A

It's not the norm, but it has helped us a bit, and to be honest, it's still less expensive than most recruiters. When you're hiring positions between $90-$150K, recruiters want 20-30% of that first year's salary, so spending $24K to build a

I think if folks here (or the public in general) knew how common this was, they'd be shocked and outraged. I can say with quite a bit of conviction, experience and data that this is incredibly common - even overwhelmingly so. My conservativ

When I talked with Tim, I had three ideas for monetization. His/Alex's may indeed be even better. #1 - Sponsorships/promotions on topically-specific "top" pages. Advertisers (like my company) pay top dollar for highly focused branding to sp

I think you're correct that Comscore controls for/removes links to searches (like Bing's news links) but not for the queries done "in network" (at least, not that I'm aware of).

Important to keep in mind that when Hitwise/Comscore/Nielsen/etc. measure "Microsoft/Bing powered searches" they're including a LOT of searches that never leave MS/Yahoo's sites. If you do a search on MSN Autos or Yahoo! News or in Facebook

If you made the link from the http://www.seomoz.org/refer-an-engineer page using your email address, we actually would track it back to you (cool feature of Jobvite - you can set it up to tweet/FB share/email links w/ your tracking code).
