If people cared about any of that, truly, deeply, then why is Gmail so dominant? I’ll use Gmail as an example here, as I think it has less network effects than Facebook. Yes, there’s the big damn hurdle of having to have contacts update you

It’s arguable that Apple launched without an app store because they were still cleaning up APIs and coming up with a plan. (And, arguably wise, if so. Apple Watch came out with door with an awful development experience.) But, yeah, that’s

Directly from the article on iOS 14: “Fonts are now counting for less than 6 % of the size” And I assume emojis are part of that relatively small percentage. (‘Apple Color Emoji.ttc’ takes up 208 megabytes on my Mac, assuming that’s how the

Would Steve Jobs’ have been tolerated these days, in a post #MeToo era? Now, I am definitely not accusing him of sexual harassment. But hand-in-hand with that, the culture seems to have shifted towards pressuring bosses of public companies

Excellent catch. And that makes some sense. A huge percentage of the country lives in a fairly narrow band near the US border in large cities. With not a lot of driving to other cities. Because they’re too far away.

I think you have to go even finer grained than that. Chicago, for example. My old stomping grounds. The inequality within that city is stark. Glaring. The South and West sides are a world apart from the North side.

Wow, the difference between the US and Canada is a surprise, in particular the opioid overdoses and road accidents. I am a US->Canada transplant, and the cultural and economic differences here just don’t seem that stark. Yes, there is un

Intel has access to most of the same machines TSMC has. OK, but, where’s the beef? Intel has been stuck for a long time now. Do we know the management and corporate culture can catch up?

Does Intel has a dramatically superior architecture? Tough to tell right now, given the process deficit. And anyways, is this transition entirely about performance? Apple is obviously selling it like that, but it seems like they really want

“Binary translation” to be pedantic, but, I agree. I was an Adobe user through the PPC->Intel transition, and that worked OK, though my subjective remembered experience says non-x86 apps felt a bit pokey. (This was a while ago, and I co

Sing it. The parent has a reasonable question. A million dollars in a world where companies with no revenue get billion dollar valuations seems like nothing, on the face of it. But a well-targeted million dollars, to a research university,

These machines are Apple’s volume in Macs. The MacBook Air, in particular. And today, Apple gets to tout their best-seller is dramatically faster and has dramatically better battery life. Makes marketing sense to me.

May I bro-science it for a second? I shy away from blaming high-fructose corn syrup as some sort of subtle poison. A gram of HFCS is anywhere from 42–55% fructose, which is the same as what you’d get from an apple. But I think there may be

I am becoming at curmudgeon at my advanced age of 37, and I feel like macOS, for keyboard-and-mouse usage, hasn’t really improved since Mac OS 10.6. Now, it sure has on a laptop; the touch gestures are nice for switching between desktops, f
