You just want to world to recognize you as "having merit" and give you money? You want to be successful, but are unwilling to make any sort of effort? Create something remarkable and people with money will find you.

No, it's stupid because a 10 line program isn't the least bit representative.

He's benchmarking based off of a 10 line PHP program and then extrapolating that this is why HPHP is needed?

This seems like some of the better advice here. In general, most common investment advice is bad because it understates risk (e.g. telling people that the stock market will perform well over the long term). The truth is that it's difficult

I think it's worth noting that this title is a fabrication, not an actual quote. What he actually said is interesting, but wouldn't get as much traffic or angry comments: "When I got started in my dorm room at Harvard, the question a lot of

This "sixth sense" exists to some extent, but it's a little dangerous to believe in it because a lot people will pretend to have it, meaning that you'll need a sixth sense about sixth senses in order to actually rely on it without getting d

If you eat like Dr Furhman recommends, I guarantee you will lose weight and keep it off, assuming you stick to the plan. It's difficult to get enough calories eating only whole fruits and vegetables (vegetable oil and corn syrup aren't vege

I'm not aware of any good books on investing, other than Taleb. (which isn't to say there aren't any, just that the ones I've started to read aren't very impressive)

Agreed. "The Game" was so amusing that I bought "Rules of the Game", but it doesn't have much substance.

Wishful thinking by whom? I have no stake in this. Android has momentum -- it's good and getting better and bigger faster than the others. It will be the Dos/Windows of the mobile world (except more open).

What's the banking equivalent of interest? My checking account pays something like 0.002%. I keep my money there for security and convenience, just like my Gmail.

If the answer were obvious, the prediction wouldn't be interesting :) That said, I think this is like the early PC market -- many platforms, but most (Commodore, Atari, etc) won't survive because they lack purpose. RIM, Nokia etc will switc

Do you keep your money in a bank, or under your mattress? I think you're underestimating the security of Google's servers and overestimating the security of your own computer.

It would be nice if they said how much money they need and what their expenses are. I also wonder if they could work with a recognized non-profit in order to make gifts tax-deductible (e.g. give them money to EFF, then EFF funds wikileaks).

In addition to being somewhat trollish, this article is inaccurate. The change doesn't make everything public -- the settings vary by type of info and also I think it tries to preserve customizations (I'm not completely sure how that aspect

That seems unlikely to me. The "submarine" essay is a good one, but it has caused people here to overestimate the cleverness of PR people. It's better to think more in terms of the press being lazy.

That's like saying that Walmart's business is cash registers. If I could aquire either Google's search business, or their ad business, I would take search, no question. The ad part could be rebuilt on search, but the opposite is not true.

This is a very interesting observation. It might be amusing if PG rewrote some of his more controversial essays in the second style, then made both versions available. Think of it as "skinning". Since the discovery version was written befor
