This is actually quite interesting since it's a meta-conversation about Etherpad, and Aaron of Etherpad includes this: "Edits to the document are represented as mathematical functions that can be applied in any order, and have other special properties that make this realtime." Unfortunately I don't have the math background to really connect what that means.
