I may be a few years behind on terminology (?) but surely sports has everything to do with sex and nothing to do with gender? No one cares what pronouns an athlete uses, how they dress, what roles and behaviours society traditionally assign

Most religions would say much the same, in fact — if you read the “experts”. So it’s very similar: a laity who believe everything is understood and a priesthood in awe at the mystery.

Fortunately with GPT3 and the like I’d imagine this approach will soon have had its day. Not that I’m optimistic about whatever will replace it.

Surely the whole of the human experience is, in the end, “informal recollections of past events”? What tells you more about poverty — learning that an individual lives on less than a dollar a day or, say, spending 24 hours without food and

I posted this but I'm not the author; I don't know if he visits HN or not. I see videos on my desktop — perhaps a browser issue?

You could wait until you have the nuts, but that might never happen. If you play too conservatively you risk just leaking blinds until you have nothing left, and because almost everyone goes in on almost every hand, you're playing agai

If you’ve ever played poker where you’re the only serious player at the table and everyone else is very loose you’ll know it’s almost impossible to win. By taking lots of risky bets the other players aren’t doing any favours for themselves

You’re right, they mostly do have to pay their medical bills but everyday treatments are inexpensive, and seeking professional medical attention is given very high priority. In my (10+ year) experience the average Chinese person is far more

If the lab theory is true it's a collaborative Chinese-US f** up. So unlikely this is purely driven by anti-Chinese prejudice.

In China, it's not unusual to go to the hospital for a cold. (I find the lab theory credible & worthy of investigation, just pointing out that in China a hospital visit doesn't imply anything about the severity of symptoms).

Yes, as I’ve said elsewhere in this thread the strictness of the Chinese lockdown has been exaggerated in the media/Western imagination.

Mainland Chinese citizens are not allowed to travel to Taiwan as individual tourists since July 2019. This was interpreted as an attempt to hurt tourism and so the economy at the time. May have been a factor.

The strictness of the enforcement in China has been overstated in the media. Strict, but not that strict. Source: here during the Chinese lockdown, have compared notes with those in other cities.

I think the issue is less ultra-pragmatism and more a desire to (quantitively) measure everything to the nth degree. It starts with five year plans at the top and filters down to almost every level of society. Once everything is understood

Quite so. The idea of a society based fundamentally on positive freedom is intrinsically oxymoronic

Sure, but when you are considering it theologically (and not historically) you are asking about what theologians/the church teaches and understands, and the internal logic of the bible and church teaching, not what the “actual” truth o

But Revelation 12 says (the) Satan is one and the same as the devil and “that old serpent” (presumably the serpent in the garden). It’s possible of course that various beings had taken on the role, and the devil was just one of them

I’m afraid I don’t have comprehensive notes, but it’s not very complicated or new (perhaps disappointingly). Maintain a lowish bodyfat (10-15% for males, I think 20-30% for females), consume sufficient nutrients (including non-famous ones l

Physical monism. Only one type of “thing” exists and it is physical/material. Contrast with dualism e.g Cartesian substance dualism (body and soul are different substances) or theories like idealism (monist, but only the mental exists)

I’ve always found this “humans are so stupid” meme a bit hard to fathom. As far as we can tell (so far) humans are by far the most intelligent thing in the universe. By what standard are we “stupid”? It seems to me to be equivalent to sayin
