I didn’t know this had a name, but it’s long been a cause of amusement (or despair!) for me. I too have noticed that any time I read an article on a subject on which I have even a passable level of expertise, I find it chock-full of errors.

I see this “mainly to prevent uprisings” idea asserted in lots of places but it strikes me as highly cynical. What’s the evidence this is the case? Even if a social policy was first introduced in response to uprisings, that doesn’t demonstr

Interested to know you see the drone strike app as a left issue? I don’t think opinions on foreign intervention fall very neatly along the left-right spectrum

This is possibly a self-destructive pattern, too. Once nobody can find anything outside of Quora/Wikipedia/Pinterest/Stackoverflow etc. why would anyone bother creating small sites/blogs (this has been happening already

Just picking your comment as one of a number of similar examples to reply to. Apologies if I’ve misunderstood the intent of these comments, but —- what is the argument that connects “alcohol is more destructive” to “cannabis (and perhaps ot

Democracy in the modern sense (universal suffrage, very large polities) is too recent an experiment to have strong data on that — the vast majority of the democratic experiment has been conducted under a US hegemony. I’m not sure the (also

I think parent’s point is that these measures are intended to stretch out the curve so the peak is lower (not overwhelming) but the area under the curve is the same (same total deaths). The hope is of course that a vaccine chops off its rig

Surely, unless the claim was that in all cases, everywhere a new road means new levels of traffic to fill it, a single counterexample does nothing to expose a fallacy? I feel like your “inevitably” here is a bit strawman-y

In visits to a number of developing countries I’ve made the same observation: driving from the wealthy, developed part where we were staying, out of the city and into the countryside I’d notice that the very worst poverty seemed to be not i
