Yes, with these kind of issues you need to keep it very simple. I have an old Chromebook that runs Linux. I did have the problem that it would sometimes wake up in my backpack and run very hot. Eventually I found out that the plastic lid wa

Most of us here on HN would probably install our own OS anyway. And many buying from the websites listed also would. But if you could go to your local hypermarket and buy a cheap Linux-laptop, I bet many customers would be happy with the in

I agree. And it does not even have to be personal. For example I know companies that have done a lot to help an employee with a critically ill spouse. I would feel some loyalty even if the company helped a colleague. And there are some jobs

I have visited some of those Maersk ships. The crew quarters and the living areas are nice. Some of the ships even had a swimming pool. It is possible because they have a very small crew relative to the size of the ship. The red and white c

The same here in Europe. But they are getting US-style terminals and software here. Sometimes waiters get a little embarrassed about it and tell you to just put in a zero amount. Sometimes they even put in zero themselves before handing you

Cars are a lot cheaper, taking inflation into account and before taxes (I am writing from Denmark) And they are much better. You can get a small car with ABS brakes, airbags, radio, air-conditioning, a fuel-efficient engine, etc that drives

There are more sturdy multi-use plastic bottles that may be as good at keeping the pressure as aluminium cans. But not as good as glass bottles.

Energy storage does not scale exponentially with speed. Kinetic energy increases quadratically with the angular velocity.

Yes (depending on the modulation), just as the bits on a CD corresponds directly to the frequency. Vinyl records have limitations determined by design decisions and physical properties. For example deep bass and stereo separation are reduce

Yes, also traditionally the business would go to the eldest son. He then knew all his life that it would become his business and prepared for it. Now it can go to all sons and daughters. That means that the one best suited can be chosen. Bu

Just because someone is setting up blocking does not mean that a law has been broken. Blocking is often used as an easy alternative to prove in courts that laws has been broken. For example considering the list mentioned in the article (and

Why would they block their own customers? And even if they did agree to block e.g., Austrians from accessing some webpages of some Cloudflare costumers, they would have to base it on some geolocation, which is just one more can of worms.

Yes, that was the big hope back then, that we would no longer need printer drivers. You could just just plug in any printer, or give an IP-address of a printer and it would immediately work. Instead it got much worse. Now when you buy a new

We use square meters in Denmark. The diameter of a CD/DVD is 120 mm, so you can fit 64 CD's per m² if you order them in a grid (more if you do not) A CD is 1.2 mm think. The ceiling height in my apartment is ca 2.7m, so I could fi

You might take code from there. But you cannot take code from OS X and add it to Darwin. And that is why I cannot just install Darwin and run it on my computers if I wanted to use e.g., network cards.
