I learned so many random bits of information from that book.. Just the amount of work that goes into laying underwater fiber! He wrote a article about it later (or before?) https://www.wired.com/1996/12/ffglass

And the best thing is that they speak zigbee and you can ditch their hubs and use homeassistant if you want to avoid any lock-in! I've actually had two Ikea Trådfri switches break though - they are cheap enough to replace but bit bothe

You are absolutely correct. It is a horrible mess. Which is why Homeassistant is a godsend - you can add the mess and present it in a sensible way. As long as you stay the fuck away from anything cloud you are pretty much golden no matter w

Sure time estimation in developmentprojects is hard (impossible?), but thats hard in both waterfall and agile or whatever. But the often used CER -> PDR -> CDR -> TRR etc. is damn useful.

Hah yeah i guess you can interpret it like that, but i give the same leeway to agile when they skip the retros and the planning before the sprints etc. You cant blame the process if you dont even make an attempt of adhering to it :)

I'm not really sure what you are arguing. Of course if its a one man job (or a couple) and the .. product or whatever isn't system/safety critical even having a PM is probably overkill and the overhead of "any" proc

Yeah - I mean, when I wrote the comment I ignored all the absolute disaster-projects I've seen. But those where doomed on so many levels I don't even wanna blame waterfall or agile or the in-betweens.

Honestly I've never seen a waterfall model implemented without iterations. And you can always update the top-spec at later date if needed its just more difficult.. Which it should be.

Yeah, because waterfall with iterations is better than SCRUM/AGILE/WHATEVER. God intended water to run from the TOP to the BOTTOM. Don't fight gravity.

I'd say its true for the majority of engineering work at least. I saw and ad for a Waffle-house manager with a salary range of 50-55k year. That's about what I earn as a engineer in Sweden (pre-tax).

Nobody is assuming "extensive maintenance checklists" are _preventing_ serious malfunction. They do however reduce the risk for such events to occur to an acceptable level. The likelihood for a malfunction is never zero.

If I'm arguing for anything is that the global food production is probably not sustainable. That doesn't exclude farming, fishing or high-density food-farming (salmon, shrimps etc.). I mean, the number of issues with providing a c

I'm not really arguing for shoveling rainforests to raise sheep on or something.. But if we enjoy the idea of living (and not starving) food produced locally has to adapt to the local lands.. Which in many places allows for a lot of gr

Maybe it is about soil composition, something you don't see in a picture? But sure, keep on looking at a picture of grass and decide that the land is suitable for other crops.

What other use for the land have YOU explored? If you could grow something more valuable than grass on a piece of land you can be quite sure that most farmers would.
