Wow, his father sounds like a piece of work. He decides that culture is the only real reason he shouldn't marry someone who was "about 9 to 12" when he's 36. Then his long absences put her at risk of being brutally gang-

Says who, you? Do you think phrases that are commonly used can't be offensive? What do idioms have to do with anything anyway? You can pretend it's the PC police, or if you want to be the kind of person who isn't insensitive

I sorta disagree, actions are what really matter. I think it's good to cut people slack and avoid grudges/judgement in general, but how are we supposed to deal with society-level problems if each example of the problem can be writ

Using dates is a good alternative, but they're not a universal solution. If Microsoft open-sources Windows XP you can be sure that dozens of articles titled "Windows XP open-sourced!" will end up on HN that day, and a site th

Expecting users (or even yourself) to manually enter URLs like "/movies/terminator2" is just not going to work long-term if you can generate the URL based on the title of the page. It's also not necessarily duplicat

I wanted to know what HN consensus was on this sort of thing, because it seems to me this is not something that inexperienced programmers do (like SQL injection). Also, full disclosure: I work for Google.

I'm an atheist, and there are atheists I don't agree with, but there isn't one way to be an atheist and I don't really expect anything from them except to not believe in god. I see feminism to be the same way, and I thin

I see it a bit differently myself. All online communities seem to end up the same way, people group together based on shared interests, which tends to lead to a false-consensus bias. Ironically, I think much of reddit has fallen victim to t
