For me, it was always more important to discover authors than to discover books. When I find a author whose thoughts and theories I am interested in, I usually read everything from this author. Usually their most popular book is the best on

A link is a dynamic thing. If you print or let users download a PDF of a Wikipedia page and for the attribution you link to a page with the edit history, what happens when the link is shut down or repurposed to show something unrelated or c

Is Bluesky still the only software which supports the AT-Protocol? Is it open source so you can run your own instance? Does Bluesky federate with other AT-Protocol instances?

With the current Twitter debacle, I think self-hosting my "notes about interesting things" (aka tweets) in a way it is accessible via the web, activitypub, bluesky and RSS might be the best way. Is anybody already doing this? It s

I have not looked into it very deeply yet, but as I understand the Bluesky project, this would not be as easy for Bluesky as it is for Twitter and Reddit. You can use your own domain as your identity. Even when you use a service like bsky.a

What's funny is that while Twitter wants you to log in and goes at great length to prevent you from reading anything when not logged in, the situation is exactly the other way round with Bluesky. They limit who can sign in, but openly

In most countries, the officially suggested intake of Vitamin D per day is 800 IU. There is a study that showed that running around naked in the sun for 30 minutes is equivalent to taking 15000 IU: https://ar.iiarjournals.org

There are thousands of tools (shellscripts, makefiles ...) which execute "python -m": https://www.gnod.com/search/?engines=af&nw=1&q=python%20-m Even in Google's own repos. Starting any of those

There is one problem with those: Security. Using modules (even if they are in the standard library) on the command line lets malicious code in the current dir take over your machine: https://twitter.com/marekgibney/stat

With "tools" I meant statistical tools, aka statistical tests. Because the log is a time series where events happen at random times, the typical tests like the t-test are not readily applicable. One way I am currently generating p

If there are runs of zeros, this should result in a number greater than 25000: for i in {1..100000}; do echo $((RANDOM % 2))$((RANDOM % 2)); done | grep 00 | wc For me, it always comes out very close to 25000.

Since it is just a text file, it is easy to merge it with other data at any point in the future. So you could log your position on a different device. And only when you want to analyze the data, you write a script which converts the positio

What works for me is that when I'm on the go, I just write events into a text file on my phone. 2023-06-27 16:00 Drink_Coffee? Yes And type them into my log when I'm at home. Sounds cumbersome, but it's in fact quite easy. I

That syntax would be valid, but I usually let a dice decide, so the value is Yes or No. And since I usually take 400mg ibuprofen, I have introduced a string for this in particular: Take_Ibu400. So in my log it looks like this: 2023-03-23 12

When every transaction is rated, the buyer will still get nagged by the seller to give them the star. My thought behind giving one star to one of the last 3 rides is that the seller does not know when the buyer will give out that star. It m

I often think that marketplace rating should work like this: Every 3 rides, you get asked "Which one of the last 3 rides did you like the best?". Then the driver you select gets 1 star. So an average driver would get 0.3 stars per

What other people use does not change how you can use the language. You don't have to use types. I just took a look at the 4 latest Show HNs which are written in Python. None of them uses types.

Yes, I meant those 5 specifically. It would be interesting if there is enough demand for a forum about a topic so that it gets 30 million users and there are absolutely no competitors on the web.
