Roast mushrooms, elephant garlic, peppers and eggplant planks are essential at any BBQ! And I say that as a meat eater... Years ago in NYC Chinatown I went to a restaurant called "Vegetarian Paradise" with all sorts of fake meat

Yes - you stated this better than I did. For me the idea of bread made with "Enriched bleached flour" is a good example of 'deceptive' food where you strip nutrients in one process and re-inject nutrients of questionable

Interesting - hadn't considered that idea. I associate vegan diets with the desire for a more optimal diet (thus healthier). The point was not really one criticizing vegans. I think it is very possible today to be plant based and have

pretty cool - anecdotally I've had a funny call or two involving Apple watches (as an EMT). My favorite was during a local celebration of the "Holi" festival (aka Indian festival of colors). It was setup in a waterfront park

I read one of Michael Pollen's books on food a few years back and the argument is something along the lines of: "Eat real food, not too much, mostly plants. Avoid 'edible food-like substances'." To my mind that is

Makes me think of Ray Dalio on transparency and 'meaningful work'. I agree that people want to vent and be heard but as others have noted meetings turn into a way for management to reinscribe control and turn complaints back on th

I went to a short training and a 90 ice bath but a trainer from his org. It was a great experience and taught me a lot about breathing. The whole battle for me was getting control of breath back and I could stay in the cold longer than I th

I like this. Recently, I semi-seriously recommended BJJ for a bullying situation. In adolescents, I see BJJ working to help kids calm down and for boys and girls to get along in a time fraught with drama. I followed my boys into BJJ and thi

Excellent reply. I make the joke ot myself "you are always the last to know that you are the asshole". I think there are systemic problems which can cause folks to be 'assholes' against their best attempts to do otherwis

I had a CTO loan me "The Goal" after I came back from USENIX in Boston (2011) talking about devops and shite... Its a good read and gave context to the Phoenix project without being a spoiler...

I started with CERT (actually a few weeks before Hurricane Sandy) and as part of that got an EMR cert. That led me to the Volunteer Ambulance Corps I am at now. See if your CERT org has the EMR - good luck!

Are you in US? All the reqs are state by state. For my Corps, to volunteer as an "observer" the minimum reqs are a CPR card and the ability to lift a stretcher. There is a simple application with a background check and interview.

In US it is state by state - they are semi-nationalizing the written exam (NREMT) but you need to take a practical exam in the state you get licensed. Volunteer EMS is dwindling a bit but still around. Often the Volunteer org will voucher y

US citizenship and American Samoa will become an interesting topic if Tulsi Gabbard becomes a frontrunner as a presidential candidate. To become POTUS you need to be "native born" US Citizen which is a very nebulous idea.
