Have a look at the "The mind's I" [1]. It is a collection of essays and other short texts on consciousness, self, AI and strange loops with added commentary by Hofstadter and Dennett. [1]: http://www.amazon.com

There is a nice python wrapper, called nolearn [1] that uses a pre-trained CNN called DeCaF to extract features prior to the final classification layer. I found the results to be surprisingly good in a lot of situations. [1]: https:/&

To me it feels like people protecting their little kingdoms within a large organisation. There is no market in which you have to compete against the new (superior) competitor so the only tool you are left with are fallacies like referring t

Ugh, here we go again. I can see that modern government struggles with many complex issues for which there are no foolproof or easy timely solutions, but really, bicycles seem to bring out a specific kind of stupid. It really is not rocket

How about watching a re-run of the X-files? Apart from the little green men and the reoccurring monster, it seems rather tame in this day and age. Secret courts, secret prisons, bit of wiretapping, all part of everyday life.

If you liked the ML Coursera class, Ng also has an introduction to deep-learning in more or less the same casual explicit style. [1]: Wiki with code, exercises and explanation [2]: Video lecture one with a recap on backprop [3]: Video lectu

Because people compartmentalise and so for engineers this is most probably not a political thing but just an interesting difficult problem that is fun to work hard on.

The poverty line is 2200, the median around 5700, and a starting cashier at one of the big supermarket chains will make 3200+ and benefits. [1] [1]: http://www.bfs.admin.ch/bfs/portal/de/index/themen/

Not at all. Enough methods, such as spread spectrum watermarking, survive a multitude of digital deformations and 'analog' attacks like printing and physically deforming. Action from 1.30 and German, but the demo is pretty clear.

Well, it is like this. The larger the initial population, the greater the probability that long streaks of some favourable outcome will appear purely by change. So if I see a single monkey throw a die that consistently lands on 6, I might b

I feel that the understated effect is, that doing x or stopping with y for a month gives you the idea (illusion) that you are in full control of your life.

No it runs deeper than that. In my experience Matlab is used by people who are not programmers and don't aspire to be them. Ever. They want to easily prototype ideas and have zero interest in the machinery that makes it run. Scipy/

The solution is basically a cross correlation in a colour channel between the image and a zebra pattern. That can be done in a few lines in more than one language. Also, 7 lines is hardly a good metric to judge the general effectiveness of

The notion that the UK police force "doesn't have or wants fire arms" gives a somewhat wrong impression. They have special fire arms squads and in major cities they either patrol amongst the regular units or are on standby. I
