This is no different from a myriad of other companies that have private networks on private fiber that span large geographical paths. Google's is probably bigger than most (both in terms of geography and throughput), but it's noth

This is interesting, but not altogether surprising. As an urban 20-something, my parents helped me my covering the lion's share of my college costs. Once that was over, it was an unspoken agreement that I was completely on my own. Fort

Anecdata: I am the administrator of a ~12k person "Free & For Sale" FB group for the college that I graduated from. It's very high traffic, people are able to buy and sell a whole host of things very easily. I think Faceb

As someone who casually sells their old computers/phones on the internet, eBay is completely useless for something like this. It's frustrating that they advertise it on TV as a place to sell old equipment, actually trying is futil

Definitely! Not going to be an exhaustive list, but I can talk about some of the bigger pieces of work. Something that always seemed to cause nagging issues was that we wanted our cluster to have data encryption at rest. Ceph does not suppo

This is precisely how I would recommend doing this if I were to be asked. Because git is content-addressable, it lends itself very well to being stored in an object storage system (as long as it has the right consistency guarantees). Instea

I'm happy to see this - I could not agree more with these points. I think they are coming at this problem from the wrong perspective - instead of growing from virtual servers to their own dedicated hardware to get better CephFS perform

After passing the ProctorU portion of the test, I was flown in and did more computer exams, as well as interviewing with some people in person. In chatting with people while I was there, it sounded like it was very expensive to fly everyone

Indeed, organization seems to be anathema to the tech-libertarian crowd around here (or, at least, the vocal part of the crowd). To a lesser extent, it is hard to think about this future when times are good, which they definitely are now. I

I completely agree, and I think this is the natural evolution of Amazon (and, to an extent, corporate America). Amazon gets to treat their min wage warehouse employees as fungible, and their process around hiring and firing shows that. Have

I mentioned this in the last post about this process, but this is not exclusive to Amazon. I did a ProctorU test for Epic a few years ago that followed the same requirements. I installed LogMeIn, let them poke around my laptop, showed some

Yeah, that lines up with what I heard from other people that had worked there, or knew people that work there. For all of the flaws though, they had a fantastic and cheap cafeteria. It's surrounded by cow farms, though, so they have to

They are a big company that operates with a fairly proprietary set of programming language and tools (see: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MUMPS ), and they hire a good number of people right out of undergraduate degrees.

I still have the original e-mail they sent me, below the requirements section to do it online (OS X or Windows PC, Webcam, Microphone, etc), they say: > If you do not have a webcam, your computer doesn’t meet the technical requirements,

By all means, this is not unique to Amazon - not that it makes it any better. I did a post-grad interview for Epic (epic.com - healthcare software) in a similar fashion, that was at least as draconian. After passing a 15 minute phone screen

I think this could quickly change in the 6 month to 1 year horizon as Amazon (potentially) adds onto this product with other AWS services built into this product. Imagine if you could easily spin up DB instances and create LBs within LightS

As @STRML said, the difference is that Amazon is using network attached (EBS) storage as the primary instance storage, instead of local SSD. This provides a ton of benefit to Amazon, and some benefit for the user as well: CoW backend allows

I am not sure that this belongs on the front page of HN, but the problem seems to stem from the `virtio-blk` driver they're using not supporting TRIM, which causes space to never deallocate once the VM writes to a block. Switching to `

While I totally agree with you, the Apple TV also includes 802.11ac which is capable of negotiating a link speed far greater than 100mbit/100mbit. Of course, speeds in excess of that are totally not necessary when streaming video, but

That'd be a pretty big bummer for anyone who adopted it recently though - I'm not sure if I could justify another $200 just for 4k when there are plenty of <$100 devices that can do it right now.
