You don't pay tax on I bonds if they are directed towards educational expenses for you or your child. Compare this with a 529, which serves a similar purpose. Then this just reduces to a stocks vs. bonds argument, but for your kid

Huge fan of SemiAnalysis run by Dylan Patel https://semianalysis.substack.com/ I have yet to find a better in-depth source for hardware ongoings.

Looking at 1961, where we have 20% and 91% marginal tax rates, this comes out to be ~19k and 1.9mil, adjusted for inflation (2k and 200k nominally). Compare these days, where we have 12% min and 37% max for 10k and 500k respectively. If we

Just a lot of standardization and years of intuiting what these mean. In this case, you definitely need some intuition of elliptic curves and "special points" that is hard to explain, but Quanta does it decently. Here's an ex

You didn't say "cost of tuition" in your original comment. Further, I think it's disingenuous to only consider tuition. Cost of living in e.g. Berkeley is ridiculous, literally more than tuition. [1] (I understand that l

Can I see your source? Here's mine [1] -- at UIUC, full tuition is 35-50k depending on residency. 30% get free tuition (given their family's net worth <50k/gross income < 67k) and 40% got some form of a loan averaging 2

I definitely share your opinion. I do think those more fortunate should put less weight on one's "wallet" and be "good samaritans". But I don't think that's a good solution to invoke the widespread change

5x is arbitrary and just how I chose to express the relative importance of doing nothing --> walking --> running. That's just my mental model. I.e. walking has no excuse barring disability. Running I recommend, but not as strongl

I'd agree. Frequency and intensity, aerobic or strength, all matter too. My mom walks for 30 minutes a day, while I run rather fast for the same time. I always tell her she should run a little, but she doesn't like to sweat. Grant

I speak with California bias, but the culture/recognition of Taiwan is rather massive here. Not as massive as Japan or South Korea, but very notable. It's all mostly food related though. Boba, Night markets, Taiwanese breakfast. O

I did some digging. To me it was rather unclear about the impact of this. Furthermore, it definitely just feels like a recategorization/relabelling on Brave's part to get some brownie points. Not that it's not interesting, bu

I'm a big fan of the radare2 suite. The integration of its ecosystem/plugin support is phenomenal. Only the decompiler is better in Ghidra, IMO, but I'm sure there's a plugin for that.

I recall voicing an opinion that we should record interviews we give candidates and re-review it during the hiring committee, much like we do code reviews. Have the interviewer justify certain beliefs about the candidate with hard timestamp

Shameless blog post, but I wrote about something similar here. [1] The TL;DR of it is that I think the hardware industry is in the exact same spot as the software industry was 20 years ago; a wild west of security. And I think the only way

Pointer authentication has been around for several years already. As with many things in hardware, though, it takes time for the software ecosystem around it to mature. Still, I've found it to be quite influential. Here are a couple &q

Slightly tangential-- to my knowledge, many common curves (e.g. secp256k1 i.e. bitcoin) use order == 3 mod 4 because it enables usage of quick Tonelli-Shanks shortcuts [1],[2]. Perhaps the claim that the selection of the curve has no cofact

Also, w.r.t water consumption, cows still put back in some water to the cycle via peeing and pooping, something that several studies I've seen don't account for. Trees don't really give back water, they just consume. My takea

Only partially true. You pay a *property* tax, which does sometimes have a land component to it, but mostly is a tax on the purchase price of your home. A Georgist-style land tax proposes a tax on solely the land, so a 2000sq-ft lot is the
