I don't know... maybe it's where I work, but the post-mortems I've been to all too often mandate some useless extra layer of review or process on top of an already byzantine change control scheme. Sometimes, "shit happens", and I wish our a

There are benefits to sprawl... I do wish there were more shopping center/apartment complex combos, which would make for a nice place to live, play and drink without driving. OTOH, I like low rent, low taxes, fresh air, and small(er) govern

Interesting. In Texas, location matters in transit (arteries and such) in a similar manner, esp. in San Antonio. That's why I choose to live a mile from work, so my commute is 10 minutes on a really bad day. But ya, Texan neighborhoods migh

Y'all talk about all these different cities as if the distance is that big a deal. Help me understand. In Texas, everything is 10-20 miles from everything else. In other words, y'all phrase it as if these cities are very distinct and unique

It wouldn't have to be your bank, either; it could be the retailer that sells your information.

I get that CL has a fast UI that is very easy to understand for non-technical users. But why can't they somehow work with others who want to improve the experience? There have been several sites that I have personally used to aggregate sear

Yes, the one about manipulation. It's in the title. Go ahead: read, do the opposite of what he suggests, and see how many people thank you for how "not-Dale Carnegie" you are.

It's about the ease and cost of use. Not every local police dept. is going to have on-demand access to a LEO satellite for tracking purposes. These bulky UAVs are the tip of the iceberg. What happens when police can have $20 robotic humming

If Reddit wanted to end karma whoring in general (to an extent), they'd move to a slashdot system where numbers are hidden, and only vague ranges (bad, new, good, excellent) are given. It wouldn't completely rid the site of the bigger votin

It seems most people here accept that NYC should, or has the right to, limit the activities of consenting private parties. Why should the government keep a couple from paying me a fwe bucks to shuffle them down the road? Oh ya, NYC and sele

Ya, that's silly. A common and simple password setup is hash(username+password) or hash(private_account_attribute+password). Also, use bcrypt/scrypt/similar.
