I use it quite a bit, though not professionally so far. Their 2.5 redesign is incredible from a usability perspective, however its not quite stable yet in my experience. Documentation is also inconsistent: there are great resource like htt

Yeah I've never heard of this either despite reading quite a lot about 3D software recently. But it's good to see an independent package that hasn't been acquired by Autodesk (yet). I'm a bit suspicious of the lack of recent reviews or disc

This is really cool. The only problem i saw is that you could sort of trick it by singing a few wrong notes around the correct one.

Really interesting comment at Reddit about what Google might be thinking: http://www.reddit.com/r/programming/comments/fd3g9/google_bi... Apparently by creating fake results they've published something "creative" and thus potentially able

The contention is that Netscape was part of the last bubble and Facebook could be part of a new bubble, but that the constant focus for developers should be on achieving their goals and not getting sidetracked by the power of these trends.

Wow, that's a good insight, seems like a possible attack vector. Maybe something like Adobe Air's security model of putting local access and network access in different iframes with a message-passing API between them would work. That's alwa

Or maybe give the judge the option of ruling that the patent holder is abusing the patent system, the penalty for which would be releasing their patent portfolio into the public domain.

Definitely. Mortgages are loans, but we have special laws for them anyway. There might be benefits to eliminating mortgage-specific laws, but it would be odd to term that argument as "mortgages don't need to be regulated".

Why would Apple create a serious competitor to their proprietary app stack when it's doing so well though? Seems to me the last thing Apple wants is to encourage cross-platform native-quality apps right now.

I wrote a little WebGL last week, and it seemed like a really solid API. Auto-compiled shaders right in the page as scripts, conversion between js arrays and GL buffers is easy, etc. The only major problem in Chrome 9 beta at least is 100%

Cool story, Kiva is so fascinating. The repeated quote that the robots are used in "about 10% of the top 100 retail companies" is silly, though, is it 10 out of the top 100 or not?

It's too bad these design awards often highlight sites that don't show much of anything and interfaces that don't do much of anything. There's some nice art there (most of it self-promotional) but there just aren't many design challenges to

Interesting, so the most broad claim that gets the most press might not end up being the one that "counts", but on the other hand when someone says you have to read the whole patent to know how narrow it is that's not necessarily true eithe

When a patent establishes a claim, and then says something like "Claim 19: The process of claim 18 further comprising overlaying a route line", does that mean the patent is narrowed to only things that include route lines, or does it still

I think on the graphing tool its as simple as the need to support IE6, 7, and 8. There are decent Canvas wrappers for relatively static content on IE (excanvas etc) and an increasingly interesting SVG wrapper at http://code.google.com/p/sv

Cool, didn't know CORS was implemented so widely, and its true about WebWorkers. But Chrome doesn't support <device> yet, or DRM. (I only mention DRM since the Youtube team says its one reason they can't fully move off Flash).

Pitted against Chrome, Flash supports webcams, microphones, cross-domain requests, DRM on video/audio, and a certain amount of multithreading through Pixel Bender. Plus (and this is huge) a designer-friendly content creation tool. HTML5 is

I should have been clearer on the "20th-century" part, I meant that Godwin's law is used to question analogies to something which happened during the 20th century i.e. not too long ago.

This is the third time in a short period I've seen Godwin's Law used as a way to discount serious discussion online. Are we really so uncomfortable with the concept of metaphor or the importance of remembering and analyzing serious events?

However in a truly competitive commodity market (and surely bits moving from A to B are a perfect example of a commodity), "charge by cost" and "charge by value" should converge, and when they don't we should be alarmed. If ISP X is making
