We got a 3930K, 32GB ram with 2xSSDs in software Raid 1 for $169/month.

We just finished doing some video encoding testing on a few different platform and EC2 (along with EC2-based offerings) are considerably slower and more expensive. Although 10x more expensive than a 3930K, a cc2.8xlarge instance was only 1.

I've never even seen a windows phone (maybe they aren't popular in Asia?)...I remember when they first came out, most reviews seemed to agree it was very superficial and in need of a lot of polish. Has to story changed?

Hard to take it seriously when they start off by suggesting that the web server, by itself, makes it a good investment. I have nothing against IIS (I think handlers written in C# is a solid feature compared to the alternatives for other ser

True, but fields around math, science and engineering have (as far as I'm aware) been rather reliable.

There's plenty of money to be made, it's a question of hard work. Luck? You were already lucky to be born in the western world. I think education is the answer, but not the type people seem focused on. I'm talking about life skills childre

I guess I've been living under a filtered bubble...I've used Google as my go-to example as the only big company not using patents offensively ( http://cultofmac.cultofmaccom.netdna-cdn.com/wp-content/uplo... )

If you can separate GMOs from the more evil commercial activities revolving around them (patents, seed control, ...), then I don't get it. I'm not saying that's an easy separation to make, but science and technology will continue to move fo

Currently dealing with design and usability experts that are spending a lot of time building things instead of shipping and trying out different approached. There seems to be an aversion to A/B testing because that would clearly challenge t

In our investigation, we've found AWS to be around 5x more expensive. Being able to save 63% during off hours (or, let's just say, reducing AWS' bill an average of 30%) doesn't really seem to make much of a difference - and that's with payi

I know I was vague, but we really are CPU-bound. We do some fairly heavy set and bitwise operations. Our smallest unit of work is about 3x-5x slower on AWS (while costing about 4x more than alternatives). This can't be further parallelized

Currently in a battle with management about whether to launch on AWS or not. They want to, engineers don't. Engineers are largely driven by raw CPU performance. Management, well, they seem to be thinking "no one ever gets fired for picking.

Best. Show. Ever. Wouldn't make an important decision based on them. They are good, but a lot of what they do isn't nearly rigorous enough to risk lives.

I don't disagree with your premise in general....but...The silliness of one rule doesn't, in my mind, invalidate all the other ones. I mean, couldn't you reverse your logic? Find a rule that makes sense (say, no smoking on the plane) and th

The FAA is being ridiculous about this. However...there's literally nothing I find more aggravating than flying - because of other passengers. Every flight, there's always a handful of people who refuse to follow the simple rules. Their car

It really is better to either have them make a first offer (or at least, give you a range) or to be slightly over-the-top when making your own first offer. Aside from that, there are at least 3 important dimensions: - location - experience

As a layman, I thought the main issue with 3D printing was the material (the article only briefly mentions this). Plastic goes a long way, but still, when I look at almost non-trivial thing around me, I tend to see more-than-just-plastic.

How much of this is being driven by issues with Windows 8 versus people simply being content with what they already have? The core 2 duo era killed the buy-a-new-computer-every-2-years thing. I think that, not tablets, is the new reality MS
