It doesn't change the fact that game design is based on variable-ratio schedules of reinforcement. Many people have issues with them (see gambling).

I was developing and designing them, so by "good" I mean a good game design – it achieves its goal of generating endless fun. By "bad" I mean the impact of this game design on players' lives – the game is "too

You can't design a game that is not a set of Skinner boxes stacked on each other.

The best games are also the most addictive. At least many single player titles end sooner or later but online ones are endless.

Art usually is not designed as a Skinner box that keeps you awake until 5am and motivates you to skip school, so you can sit at a gaming café all day. While I found some great friends during the "gaming years", most of the time ga

It also got worse after social, mobile, and indie bubbles. Nowadays a small number of companies control most of the market. In 2012 I had more freelance gigs than I could handle, but 3 years later it was impossible to find something decent.

Because in the last years all the markets have become extremely competitive, including the niche ones. Even if you find an "easy" market and make a product with weak UX for it – it's only a matter of time before a competitor

SalesForce was founded in 1999. Are there any examples that released after 2010 and got a significant part of their markets? Except for maybe Snapchat which is not too bad, just weird.

I feel like I should place the "Marketing" section higher. There's a list of questions to do a market research before even starting and discover if the fundamentals of your product are correct.

I don't suggest to learn it all before starting. But I wrote #1 in the "Marketing" part: "Have I solved a problem serious enough for people to bother to become my customers?"

It's not a separate long process because there's only one decision maker. You basically need a good landing page and a working product's demo. Sometimes a client asks a question in support before a purchase but most of the pu

I don't live in the US but classifieds are more user-friendly in other countries. You can't launch Craiglist in 2017 though. I know that there are numerous exceptions from the 00s and even from the App Store 5-6 years ago. But it&

This is mentioned in the "Marketing" part as one of the core research questions. I agree that it should be addressed more but didn't want to overload the article – it's long enough already.

It's not a mainstay, I wrote that you don't need to focus on design instead of functionality and that a $50 template will be ok. The goal is to develop a sense of good design, so you can pick a good template or hire good designe

Author here, I agree that "good enough UI" will do but I can't remember Wikipedia or Gmail having a terrible user experience on launch. In case of Reddit and HN, I started to use them many years after I learned about them – m

Imageboards have a clickbait-based bubble. To survive on a busy board, you need to create a post that captures attention. Hence, the effect of 4chan on the Internet — its top posters are the edge of the troll evolution.

I'm not in the US but according to what I read, 6-digit for a game developer is kind of unicorn salary. I think /r/gamedev should also know better because I haven't seen many game developers here.

You may be overqualified already. Game development is one of the worst parts of the tech industry. It preys on fresh grads who are dreaming to make video games. It's constant crunch and the salaries are low. Check this and similar thre

Snippets to the rescue. I don't remember their syntax but also don't type it (same for many other verbose parts of Obj-C).

It's weird how so many people bash Obj-C for the syntax. Behind the square brackets, it's just another OOP language. The real problem is getting puzzling regressions because of an accidental message to nil.
