I've worked with the overseas "talent" and if that is the best they can do, I'm not worried. Hell, I've worked with a lot of people on the US side of the pond who have experience or are educatied and they can't

I started using Typescript at work. It is so joyful to install a library, import it, and then to explore the API through my turbo-charged IDE thanks to the type-hints provided by the type files.

Yep, exactly. I went down this "trades are great!" rabbit hole a while ago because I had a cousin who had a friend telling him: "You can be making 6 figures in 5 years as an electrician!" I was surprised when I found out

Agreed, I would never recommend someone go to art school unless they are absurdly talented ( and at that point: The school would probably give you a scholarship. )

I think this trade school obsession is foolish. Everyone cargo-cults it as "pragmatic" without actually analyzing what the jobs entail and what you can actually expect to make. Statistically, you still earn way more with a degree

This isn't just preachy. It is ignorant and condescending. I'm very glad you have never experienced enough abuse in your life to the point that you had to cut someone out of your life. Maybe you should be listening to victims inst

Naw, Jim is a good guy. Uses inclusive language, I've never heard him say anything racist. The circles he runs in are all EXTREMELY progressive. In fact he actively advocates for gay and trans rights.

Agreed. That statement is one of those catty oft repeated things we are supposed to take as gospel for some reason. Personally: I spend ALL DAY typing. Configurations, code, documentation, tutorials, arguments for doing things one way or an

I'm not knocking Paul Graham or anyone who did well for themselves. But comparing your experience with that of Paul Graham, one of the richest people on the planet, is pointless. The wealthy live on a completely different PLANET than y

I picked up this book, wasn't a huge fan. The idea is great: teach mathematics in a way a computer programmer would understand. But the title is misleading. The premise that this book will teach you maths using your already existing pr

I think Joker put it well when it said: "The thing about mental illness is that people expect you to act like you do not have it." I have my own idiom: "If these people could be normal, they would chose to be normal." #1

In college, IRC chat rooms with bots serving books from an FTP server were a life saver. I don't think I bought 5 books throughout my entire college career. Me and my buddies also built a textbook scanner that saved us a ton of money.
