Alexis is amazing with all things product, marketing, and community. Alina is best with engineering, hard tech challenges, and hacking growth. I focus most on product and design. Kim helps people with marketing and PR. We all help people wi

We built software companies, so that tends to be what we know the best. I think the question of sector is really hard for this stage of investment because early on I learned that the best companies to invest in aren't the ones who are

We're spoken for, but I appreciate it. I highly recommend YC demo day and checking out YC-backed Funders Club.

We're trying to figure this out now — we're friends with both FundersClub and AngelList folks and it's something we've been talking about.

We've invested in all of them, almost all of them in the earliest possible seed stage. (Small nit: Carried interest doesn't have anything to do with advisory shares.)

YC is awesome and I remain a super big supporter. I owe half my career and most of my friends to what an awesome family YC has become. What I realized was just that I could help companies the most in that 9 to 18 months you have after YC is

We're trying to figure out ways to get around this for later stage seed investments. We don't have a solution yet, but we're working on it. In a thread below I talk about file cabinet industries — industries that basically ha

We've funded companies all over the place, and it just so happens many of them are in SF. If anything, the ongoing housing crisis that's systemically being ignored by local politicians is making it that much more likely our next s

Hi HN! Happy to answer questions here, which is funny because this is where it all really started for me back in 2007 when I was first thinking of starting my first company. I started as an HN reader working at a friend's startup, appl

That you guys are discussing veterinary care and insurance shows that you don't actually know what Vetcove does. They actually are a B2B marketplace for veterinary supplies used by vet clinics. Consumers don't use it at all, and i

You seem to be ignoring the simple fact that YC has invested in startups now worth over $80B in market value and the closest comparable is more than 10X less. You're right that most have difficulty getting to $100M but frankly that is

I don't even work at YC anymore but care about it deeply. The deal is actually a good one because it's not like getting money from someplace where you get some advice once in awhile and that's it. It's a huge community t

You misunderstand. Most folks don't even do that. If you can't grow from small numbers then it will be impossible to grow at large numbers. These stats are table stakes.

This post is factually wrong. GM acquired a ready to go R&D lab and leapfrogged everyone else in the process. The rest of the automotive industry is now playing catchup.

You'll notice the ranking does not include YC at all in the listing because the researchers were told that YC was opting out of such ranking lists that year. YC remains the premier #1, regardless of list.

I've literally written Posthaven into my estate plan to make sure there is funding for it, if that helps. There's pretty considerable paperwork involved in a nonprofit and it's been trickier than I had hoped to get it there.

I agree that there is a big opportunity here but suspect long term this will be solved in a different way: more great benevolent former founder seed investors will emerge and more startups will be funded.
