This is amazing work from Valve, but I have to admit some fear that it'll eventually stop. They started to put a lot of work into Linux gaming/Steam Machines when the Microsoft Store was a potential existential threat on Windows,

I've got an RX580; it works almost flawlessly, including for games emulated via Proton/etc.. The only significant problem I've had was when I (unwittingly) received a new Mesa installation (I'm on NixOS/unstable, s

I'll have to read up on that. We just leverage enums and Typescript's slightly more strict type checking to state that the store can be in only certain states, and use the excellent typesafe-actions library. I'll write up a

We do something like this to encode our Redux states at compile-time (using TypeScript, obviously). Previously, using regular JS, the Redux devtools made tracking down incorrectly implemented reducers/state transition reasonably strai

It's twofold. 1. breathing polluted air sucks, and we can improve that by replacing gas vehicles with electric vehicles. 2. global warming is awful, and we can improve that by replacing our generation activity (solar, wind, hydro, nucl

The bq cervantes[1] is completely open source. It runs an old (old) Debian Linux, but it's OSS top to bottom, they tell you how to get into it and run your own firmware, their e-reader app is open source, and you're free to hack

It's more an industry error, I suspect. The University I went to forced all the Software Engineers to do some of the traditional Engineering papers, including courses on ethics. The professional institute that accredits the Universit

I stopped after a couple of episodes. Maybe it picks up, but the book is one of my most treasured reads, and it just didn't seem to fit for me. It somehow misses the absurdism of the book. I could be being overly harsh, but... it ju

I'm really hesitant to wade into this. I think resigning was the right move for Stallman. What he actually said , without Vice editing the quote, is: We can imagine many scenarios, but the most plausible scenario is that she present

Yes, Apple Music is just Spotify by Apple -- but , if you're outside of the USA, you might find less obscure music available. Regional restrictions here in NZ are frustrating.

I get that semi-regularly; do you have strict content blocking + fingerprinters turned on in Firefox? IIRC that advertises that you're on FF ESR and a few sites deem that too old.

gphoto2 is more for archival. For whatever reason it feels safer to me to use the CLI as a feeder for the other apps; gphoto2 grabs the photos off the camera, pops them in a folder, and I then import into digiKam from there rather than f

1Blocker X is brilliant. Use the YouTube website, not the app; content blocking only works inside Safari afaict (for instance, Firefox on iOS doesn't seem to benefit from the content blocker).

I've been trying to migrate my flow from Lightroom to purely OSS tools. So far I've landed on a big mess of importing RAW with the gphoto2 CLI so that I've got a reliable archive to then feed the other tools: digiKam for act

I believe that's correct. There's an 8 core with 65w TDP which has a confirmed single chiplet; my guess is the 8 core with 105w TDP is two chiplets with several cores disabled.

I'd love to see something like this tied to a password manager to make more of an "identity manager". Visit a site, click "generate identity", receive a unique email address, username and password.

I think there's a real cultural clash between NZ and the US style of politics that is readily visible in this thread. Our censors have most visibly banned a few videogames in their time, but as an office, I think most kiwis accept the
