I use FreeBSD for my NAS/utility server at home, and am considering switching over to Linux now that ZFS seems pretty stable there. NixOS is my happy place these days.

Just an expression of speech :). On Linux and macOS, I use the native stuff, on iOS I use the app the Wireguard team produced. I believe they've produced an Android app too.

I keep mullvad + Wireguard in my back pocket for when there's no choice but VPNing. It's been a perfectly workable combo so far.

Travel is the other use case; if I know I'll be at a backpackers with free (but open) wifi, then having a VPN is very handy.

Not that I use Rust for more than toy projects, and not that the choice of allocator makes (any) difference for those... but I'm stoked to see the system allocator used by default now. Tiny binaries are good binaries.

They don't support aptX, but Beats and others (the Sony 1000Xs, for instance) usually support AAC over Bluetooth which is similar in quality.

Venice is an extreme case, I agree. That's one of the places that we visited that had the small kind of bed tax I'm thinking of; unfortunately that probably isn't fixing their problems. Many of their tourists stay in cruise

Yeah, this is roughly where my thoughts lie. When my partner and I were travelling around Europe, many of the popular cities charged a bed tax — usually only a euro or two a night, so not enough to put us off in anyway, but in aggregate all

We use it for application-wide stuff that would need to be drilled down several layers, and isn't state. So -- as a contrived example -- if we have a form that submits to a configurable URL (configurable at build time), then we wrap

It's just another input. Previously, React derived a rendered set of virtual-dom nodes from `props` and `state`. Now, it' derives that set of nodes from `props`, `state` and `context`. It's useful syntactical sugar.

Hope that someone builds it for me ;). I can't really do anything with that concept, because life is very full for me currently and is likely to remain so for the next year. It's just something I've been scribbling down on

I've been trying to get my head around the idea of smashing SSB (the underlying networkable append-only log store, rather than the social network) together with some of the concepts from Camlistore, IPFS and Tim Berners-Lee's SOLI

Yeah, it's the VR part that throws me for a twist. I had a 30m HDMI cable once; my video card/TV were only capable of 720p@30Hz over it, which obviously isn't a good match for VR. Apparently active cables are the way to go.

This is interesting. My PC is in a little office; if I want to play things sprawled out, I've got a Steamlink (after they went on sale for $5) attached to my TV in the other room. If I wanted to use VR, I'd need to move the PC i

A fun read and on the face of it, Apple's stance does seem obstinate/bizarre... but on the other hand, with my testing hat on: how can you claim to support an unreleased phone? There's not even a cloud testing service yet...

Yeah, that might be the only way to handle this reasonably in the short-term -- `if (window.IPFS) { fetch(revisionListFromAnIPNS).then(renderIt) }`... but my concern is that if the standard changes in the future and IPFS gets integrated int

There's been a few things cropping up in this space recently. On the topic of "indicating that this might be an outdated version", I've not managed to figure out a better solution than either linking to an IPNS index of

I'm on a 6+, and the performance is a significant step up (more so than going from a degraded battery to a new battery sometime after the iOS 11 thing). It wedges me somewhat between a rock and a hard place; I'm getting the grey

Hi, I've been playing with making something similar myself -- although using IPFS rather than Dat. I notice you've married up Webmentions and Dat; how have you done that? The only real solution I've come up with is to run a

From a conference I attended years ago, the key motivator is that request/response networking is pretty much already broken when we get to the moon; once Mars comes into the picture, it'll be even more so. When each TCP packet re

While the built-in reader isn't the most amazing thing in the world, I assume this also means the Subscribe button is being killed? I'm sure an extension will be able to do the same thing, but that's somewhat of a nuisance.

Most everything we do with computers in the modern world uses the network. If software is insecure -- is it really usable? Is it really reliable? I'd pretty strongly argue that the answer to both questions is no :).

This is neat. The Fediverse is a really exciting development in the re-decentralization of the web. Is there any intent to also expose published articles as, say, IPFS blobs or Dat archives? It'd be cool to see some of these service
