so, if i tell you (and provide evidence) that I am a parent of a 2 year old, will you concede the point? or if i produce other such parents of toddlers who agree with me, will you concede?

Only people who try reasoning with two year olds can understand what sort of processes are truth seeking and capable of solving problems and being educational, or not? Or only people who try reasoning with two year olds get so frustrated th

The reason hitting people is bad is not that you will get hit back. That is one reason, but it's not the most important one, otherwise it'd be ok to hit defenseless people (like one's children). Hitting people is an ineffective way of life

libertarians frequently take positions like "I own the TV, so it's my decision if/when it will be used." How does this book handle that sort of issue? (Note: I am generally libertarian-oriented and this kind of position is often taken by pe

Heh I tricked archive.org and got the first page of the thread i wanted and found: "Part of the problem here, some argue, is a lack of clarity or transparency in those posts, such that people whose views closely correspond to TCS generally

There are ideas called "Taking Children Seriously" (TCS) and the UP (Unconditional Parenting is a book by Alfie Kohn) forum was closed down to avoid those ideas and the yahoogroup explicitly bans any discussion of TCS -- even when a newbie

There are severe limitations on how far Alfie Kohn and his following will follow the implications of his ideas. They have gone so far as to ban discussion of certain ideas, basically because parents were too uncomfortable about being asked

It's not that you failed exactly -- I thought I got the point. It's just that it's pretty hard to be sure on online forums. Plus I didn't read the article :) What I noticed was you said we should define intelligence in terms of being normal

I'm on your site, and read that section, and it does not tell me what the difference between a 5 and a 15 is. If you want users, don't make them read the paper itself to find out. In other words, it's not obvious what units the numbers are

Regarding that link, in the "background essay": The first sentence misuses the word "revolutionary". The second sentence misuses the term "all aspects". The third sentence misquotes the general position of string theorists (I think) by misu

some things some physicists do aren't empirically-based, yes that's correct. whether you call that "science" is a matter of terminology, but the important thing is whether it's high or low quality thinking, and the atmosphere and ethos has

i wouldn't call string theory factually false yet -- that's too controversial, and one shouldn't use the word 'fact' except when it's quite clear. the data about whether physicists act like priests is not controversial so using 'fact' is ok

Here is the same sort of advice I'd give a web startup: make it really clear what the point is, on the front page. You have a pretty, color picture. Good start. It has a legend which pairs colors to numbers. But what do the numbers mean, in

The problem with this theory is that it's factually false. Physicists simply do not behave that way. A handful do, but physicists in general are much more principled than most other specialists in other fields, which is why physics has been
