Words in the English language are not the same as computer code. I'm not sure you can fully define most words in terms of other words -- hence the variety. Dictionaries generally only provide rough sketches of the meaning of a word. Ev

It's hard. And science gives really unsatisfying answers to many big questions. What happens after we die? What does it all mean? Does my pain have meaning? Am I special? What is consciousness? Will I ever be able to talk to my dead gr

"Our goal is to organize all of the world's information." Funny how this seems much creepier in 2019 than it did in 2005...

This is interesting, but I'm suspicious of the rosiness of the 1.15x return math when it implies that if this business starts on day one with a $1 ad buy they'll have $84bil in revenue after about six months.

There are extremely obvious negative externalities, though. That's why minimum wage laws exist in almost every country in the world.

Nope. Unpaid workers depress the labor market when people who need to be paid to work have to compete against people working for free. That's one reason it's illegal.

I'm not physically disabled. But I've been very curious over the years about how modern video games can allow disabled gamers to step momentarily out of their condition. Even single-player games. Red Dead Redemption 2, for example

80s colorized movies looked pretty terrible. That was at least half the problem. I’d say we’re actually more open to black and white media these days. It doesn’t have the ‘stink of the old’ that it had in the couple of decades after color T

Because people want what they create to be seen by other people. And today that means they have to use Instagram or Twitter. Or maybe Medium. Or something else very highly constrained. So you see a fucktonne of creativity within the very na

It's interesting that a lot of sound programming environments are primarily visual -- I'm thinking pd, Max/MSP, and Reaktor. Probably because many audio synthesis concepts trace back to when people literally had to wire hardw

If your coworkers are unionizing, maybe it would be polite to at least attempt to understand their reasons and goals before dismissing it outright as something you don't want or need.

You're very fortunate. But I'll note that even engineers who are less productive than you deserve stability and some level of control over their work lives. So maybe consider it part of your moral imperative as a "winner"
