Eh, I can almost guarantee it has almost no battery impact. JavaScriptCore is fairly fast, business logic doesn't take that long to run (100ms vs 200ms, whatever.), and it all pales in comparison to running GPS or the display for a few

Sure they can't "kill" it, but a huge fraction of the work on Atom comes from full-time people employed by GitHub. They can handicap it to the point that VSCode becomes the better editor.

Haha not to bash on the article at all, but I laughed at the title. Here's my take on how founders write a quality blog post in 1 hour: 1) Founder opens iA Writer and types for an hour 2) Founder thinks post is great and publishes imme

Electron’s performance is fairly tied to Chromium’s - the Electron changelog references a Chromium version bump and you’ll need to look there for perf improvements (which isn’t ideal - I wish they’d pulled in some highlights!) To be honest,

$69 is chump change - Navicat is like $1,000. I worry that it's not enough for the app to be maintained for a long time after purchase. I'd pay $69/year without even thinking about it, maybe they should jump on the subscripti

Haha 1) this is crazy 2) I think it'd be more fun to train the data set against Christmas trees. The Eiffel tower's lights don't much resemble other buildings since the lighting is decorative and not functional. Much closer t

I can’t speak for Slack, but I ship Mailspring for Linux as a Snap (and not a Flatpak) because snap provides a unified approach to automatic updates and the app is updated frequently. It’s an a major win from a developer perspective, becaus

Maybe you thought it'd be an infographic? This is totally a valid visualization as far as I'm concerned. It packages and communicates data visually that would otherwise be difficult to see. It doesn't abstract up from the dat

Nice! Went to a talk about this last week - this post outlines a fairly solid approach to syncing application state in a multi-window Electron app if you have a lot of data. I haven’t used Realm, but we built something similar on top of SQL

My favorite part of the whole PWA marketing push is that they encourage use of the Service Worker API for offline caching, but leave cache invalidation / cleanup as an exercise to the reader. "Do it the way it makes sense for your

This looks great! Minor nits: In what way is this an OS? Also in the US, Airborn (e.g. to be in the air) is spelled "Airborne" and it's difficult to type it without the trailing 'e' without spellcheck fixing it auto

I think the problem is that 10% of Gmail users think Inbox is awesome and the rest think it's godawful for breaking 'feature X' they loved. Where feature X isn't one feature but a thousand tiny things. I think with Add-o

Yeah - in the macOS community Coda is a fairly well known text editor for web development. The team at Panic should definitely stand their ground on this one...

I mean, if you just want to record your purchases / expenses and you don’t want any features that use the internet, you’re basically talking about a spreadsheet. Maybe there’s a spreadsheet app with decent enough UI to be a good choice

Hey! Mailspring maintainer here—could you elaborate on the "open core model"? I'm not sure I follow. If it'd generate more than $~10k/mo in revenue and would allow me and others at F376 to sustainably work on Mailsp

Hey! Mailspring maintainer here—the app doesn't support plaintext emails (at least not out of the box), but it's likely we'll add support in the future. A lot of the features in the app, like read receipts and link tracking,

Yeah... doesn't seem promising to me. When transaction fees need to pay for mining / transaction validation, people will probably stop using Bitcoin for purchases they could make with other methods of payment.

Haha thanks - I didn't think it supported H265 but it looks like I just have to build it from source ( https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/H.265 ). Suppose that's still fairly "easily" ;-)
