One thing they really need to do, is have servers ready to serve a better error page. On servers I maintain, if there's an outage, and it looks like it may be awhile, I have an outage page I can put up. Sites being down is bad enough, but a

They've had a lot of down time lately, they really need to figure out something as far as contingency plans.

This is the problem with ALL health insurance, national or not. Unless everyone starts paying for everything out of pocket, some will take more than their 'share'. To make a larger point, the problems of others are your problems as well. If

Interesting, however, it reminds me of an interview I saw of outsider independent filmmaker Errol Morris on 60 minutes[1]. When asked if he wishes he could win an Oscar for his work, he never has, Morris quickly replied 'of course', and we

This is more like the guide to a bad geek stereotype. Seriously, gems like Geeks tend towards packaged, junk foods just made me shake my head. Especially funny given how many diet and exercise articles show up on hacker news. As another e

Wouldn't it suck if you were some kid with a lot of ambition, and some huge ideas, who tried to bite off more than he or she could handle, all while the world watched and encouraged you? Wouldn't it suck if you felt a real obligation to se

How ugly do non-regex based email validation functions look? I've never seen one, but I've always wondered if that was a more elegant solution.

I expect what any reasonable person who just invested $170k in a group of four strangers with vague plans and no proof of concept would expect.

Good to hear, but that algorithm isn't LRU, and LRU makes more sense when backing a cache.

I think you nailed it. I'll add to that though. often, when people die (and _why did in a sense die), people view everything they did through rose colored lenses. I'm with the majority in HNers in this thread so far, still in awe of _why, h

The proposition that we should end a matter of opinion 'once and for all' makes absolutely no sense. Submitter, you do realize human nature doesn't work this way, yes?

Agreed, node development is going at a breakneck pace, but you should count on your code not working 6 months down the line without at least as few tweaks. BTW, the new Buffer objects are awesome, and provide massive speed increases with bi

My company's a paying customer and we migrated from EY to Heroku. I think they're roughly comparable but the deal breakers for me were Postgres, Addons, and the Git Workflow.

That's true, I agree 100%. I'd add to that though, if you're a small company sometimes you must recognize that a larger 3rd party can use scale to provide a more reliable service than you can.

What about how heroku is designed would require re-engineering if you move it elsewhere? Rails + SQL + Memcached = the most standard stack you can build, aside from the fact that they use Postgres. Most of the addons aren't too hard to setu

I think you're exaggerating / misinformed. I'm a heroku customer, and I dealt with the pain of this outage earlier this week. status.heroku.com had all the info about it. If you want more detail you can just submit a request to support, whi
