Ugh. Another FB article. When the revolution comes, the spark that lights the fire won't come from Hacker News. /me goes off to find a greasemonkey script to drop FB articles.

Infrequent bugs are a feature, they keep users from having to upgrade their software, which is annoying. That's why I avoid Wordpress. I've never looked at the WP codebase, but I'm just flabbergasted that a piece of blogging software that's

Don't worry, soon the stylistic tides will turn and the analogy will be war/raising kids/making the perfect turkey sandwich instead of dating, and the articles will flow just as freely.

Change is good. Temporary uncomfort is good. This isn't like moving to a new city to broaden your horizons. I didn't find changing the side the buttons were on expanded my consciousness and brought about a refreshing personal transformati

I agree, this reminds me of how people would get up in arms about 2d artwork created on a computer. Sadly, many people confuse craftsmanship for art, this leaves people who like things the way they are angry, and those who want the new shin

Luckily, this is easy to fix, just: run gconf-editor then, Change apps -> metacity -> general -> button_layout to ':minimize, maximize, close' without quotes

EDIT: After looking at this http://nodejs.org/jsconf2010.pdf from sh1mmer's post, it looks like I need to be using a Buffer object to serve data over 64kb due to v8's garbage collector making a performance mess when using strings. EDIT2:

Well, then why do all the examples in the article look like those horrible skinned apps? I have a feeling that what the author proposes leads us down the road of pretty but ridiculous interfaces.

I think to a certain extent we already had Movie OS in the early 00s / late 90s when all kinds of apps were skinned. People would make all kinds of baroque skins that looked like they came out of movies, that acted much like this, but you k

That may be, but all the specific shortcomings he mentioned in the article are definitely not there with CouchDB, which he specifically mentions. The futon (builtin) interface to Couch solves every one of the gripes he mentions with ZODB.

Basically, he used to use Zope, and didn't like that you needed to instantiate an object to get it out of the DB. Then he complains his coworkers had some kind of ambiguous problem with this that only the author was smart enough to solve, t

Thanks for the helpful info, I do still have one reservation about mongo however. There is one thing that couch does to better than mongo, and thats single server durability. You can pretty much kill -9 couch and it won't care (that's prett

I'd be interested to hear a little bit about choosing between CouchDB, MongodB, and others. Couch and Mongo are the two I'm most interested in, but I haven't had the time to really look at either closely.

They give you $25, since most stuff on Gilt is pretty pricey (most items are $80+, with a lot that extend into the hundreds) my guess is it all works out for them. Plus, they have a rather steep $12 shipping+handling fee.

Well, the big advantage is it doesn't listen on a port, which means if the system in question has a crazy local firewall policy, this works better. Also, on a multi-user system, this is more secure as other users cannot connect to this port
