E.O. Wilson once said of communism, 'Great idea, wrong species.' Whether or not that was true of communism, it seems true of crypto. It has brilliant technical ideas and clever solutions to problems with traditional currencies, bu

Why don't you wait to see how the court case is resolved before you throw your dummy? It's entirely possible the court will rule against Wright, setting a precedent that protects developers from this sort of legal action.

I'd like to make a crowdfund campaign so I can pay Talenthouse creators to make an advertising campaign with a simple message: "Do Not Work on Spec. Ever. For Anyone." And especially not for shady 'platforms' that a

Perhaps an American romance novelist is not the most reliable source of information about British public schools. William Golding, the author of Lord of the Flies, did not attend a public school; he attended the non-residential co-education

Friendly advice, stop digging and step away from this thread/talk to your PR team. You're not helping yourself or Cloudflare by responding in this way.

That response misses the point by a wide margin.

Who is stopping you from doing that? Use whichever pronouns you want. Unless of course by ”I prefer” you mean “everyone should,” which is a different matter.

What's as worrying, judging by the comments here and in that GitHub thread, is that there is no correlation between technical ability and ethical understanding. Perhaps naively, I'd have thought someone intelligent enough to devel

Lack of integrity in general is not news, but it is valuable to know about specific examples. Not least because it undermines Facebook’s PR fluff.

I read this article immediately after reading Corey Doctorow's The ‘Enshittification’ of TikTok [0]. It's a useful juxtaposition if you're interested in thinking about how Artifact is likely to develop if it gains traction. [

Somewhat ironically, this article isn't helpful because it oversimplifies a complex topic. Many factors contribute to "good writing" and they can't be distilled to "ordinary words and simple sentences". For exa

Seems an unjustified over generalisation or you’re taking the ‘personal’ in personal information too literally. I use obsidian to manage notes for my job, which is research and writing.

It's not really deeply technical, it's just trying to be comprehensive and concise. If you want deeply technical, read Pullum's explanation of passives in Cambridge Grammar of the English Language.

But it does say "Never use the passive where you can use the active." That advice is harmful to clear and elegant writing. The passive really has nothing to do with politics and police and misleading people. It's a just a str

When I spend several thousand pounds on a laptop, I expect its features, including its privacy features, to maximally benefit me, not some hypothetical refurbisher who I, quite honestly, don't give a shit about.

The 'mere' anti-theft and privacy benefits are way more important to me than the second-hand market. Plus, the difficulty caused by the anti-theft mechanism is straightforward to overcome provided the seller is legitimate.

A bit off topic, but a knighthood doesn't make you upper-class. In England, the real upper-classes are landed nobles with hereditary titles (who will look down on any parvenu with a knighthood and a few billion).
